Chapter 512: Apologize Later

Zacharyโ€™s hand froze mid-air. He didn't withdraw it. โ€œLโ€ฆโ€

Before he could finish, Cecilia turned and returned to her room. Zachary wanted to apologize, but Nathaniel restrained him. โ€œNathaniel, why are you pulling me?โ€

Nathanielโ€™s lips parted slightly. โ€œApologize later.โ€ It was St. Patrickโ€™s Day, and he wanted no part in Zacharyโ€™s troubles.

Zachary agreed. โ€œAll right then.โ€ Heโ€™d initially planned to meet Ceciliaโ€™s son, but decided to leave. โ€œThen, Iโ€™ll head back now. Iโ€™ll come see you next time.โ€

โ€œAll right.โ€

Zachary left.

Returning to her room, Cecilia resumed reading. Later, when Nathaniel returned, she asked, โ€œWhen you said you had something to deal with, were you referring to Zachary?โ€

Worried about being implicated, Nathaniel distanced himself. โ€œI didnโ€™t know what Zachary said.โ€

Closing her book, Cecilia looked at him intently. โ€œThatโ€™s good, because Zachary and I could never be friends, at least not now.โ€ She didn't interfere with Nathaniel's friendships, but she had her own way of making friends.

Nathaniel quietly sat beside her, pulling her into an embrace. โ€œWhatever you say.โ€

Cecilia was startled and tried to pull away. โ€œIโ€™m going to read.โ€

โ€œWhat are you reading?โ€ Nathaniel asked, holding her.

โ€œAn ordinary law book from your study,โ€ Cecilia replied.

Nathanielโ€™s study was a miniature library. Paula was still awaiting a verdict, and Cecilia planned to reclaim the Smith family property, so she was studying law.

โ€œIs it because of Paula? Should I find you some lawyers?โ€ Nathaniel asked.

Cecilia declined. โ€œNo need. I can handle it.โ€

Nathaniel noticed Cecilia increasingly avoided asking for his help. He was about to speak when a housekeeper knocked. Cecilia quickly pushed Nathaniel away.

Nathaniel, annoyed, asked, โ€œWhatโ€™s the matter?โ€

The housekeeper bowed. โ€œOld Mr. Rainsworth requests your, Mrs. Rainsworthโ€™s, and Mr. Elliotโ€™s presence for dinner.โ€

โ€œUnderstood.โ€

The housekeeper left, still thinking about seeing Nathaniel and Cecilia embracing. After she left, Nathaniel reached for Cecilia, but she tossed him a large hug pillow.

โ€œDonโ€™t just hold me. I donโ€™t like it.โ€ Cecilia, showing a slight baby bump, felt cramped.

She then went to call Elliot for dinner. Elliot, engrossed in building blocks, sprang up. โ€œMommy, whatโ€™s up?โ€

โ€œYour great-grandpa invited us to dinner. Be mindful of what you say, understand?โ€ Cecilia requested.

Elliot nodded vigorously. โ€œDonโ€™t worry, Mommy. I promise to be good.โ€

Cecilia smiled and patted his head. Elliot, outwardly well-behaved, plotted to mischief at the Rainsworth dinner.

That evening, when they joined the others at the long dining table, Adrian's family, Nicholas, Cassandra, and Elena were already seated. Adrian looked unwell, and Felix glared at Elliot. (The narrator's aside about Felix's resemblance to Jon is omitted as it's a parenthetical thought.)
