Chapter 567: Biased Toward Cassandra
Cecilia instructed the housekeeper to bar Paula from entering again. How could Paula, who ignored her own daughter, be expected to acknowledge her grandson?
Returning home, Paula still suffered abdominal pain. "Cecilia merely shoved me; how could that cause this?" she wondered. She initially considered seeing a doctor, but the pain subsided shortly afterward. Unfazed, she switched on the hospital room television and saw a video of Cassandra dancing. Overjoyed, she watched her radiant daughter.
Magnus presented a stack of letters. "Mom, these are from Cecilia's lawyers. They demand we return the Smith family's assets."
Paula accepted the letters and a summons copy. "Cecilia is truly opposing me."
"Mom, didn't you say we were temporarily lending money to the Evans family, to be repaid double? Now that they're prosperous, they should repay me so I can manage the company," Magnus mused.
Paula patted his shoulder reassuringly. "Magnus, I've given that money to Mr. Ralph. You'll work with him. Furthermore, Cassandra is a renowned international dancer; all future wealth will be hers."
Magnus knew Cassandra was Paula and Ralph's daughter. He hadn't expected such bias. "Mom, I'm your son too. Why favor Cassandra so much? Did she visit you at the police station?"
Paula frowned. "Cassandra's a public figure. Paparazzi might catch her visiting. Can you compare yourself to her? She's accomplished more than I ever did, and the Jamieson family's wealth will be hers. Just listen to her, and she'll treat you well."
Magnus had always felt favored, but their overseas encounter with Cassandra changed everything. He understood Cecilia's neglect. "Are you sure you're not returning my money?"
Paula's eyes were indifferent. "Fine. I won't bother with you anymore. Let your beloved Cassandra take care of you, then." Magnus left the ward.
Paula had cared for her son, but seeing his increasing uselessness, she'd stopped hoping for him.
After leaving the hospital, lost and unwilling to accept mediocrity, Magnus saw a sleek black Bentley pull up. The rear window lowered, revealing Nicholas' striking face. Startled, Magnus recognized him.
"Get in," Nicholas said.
In the car, Magnus saw Nicholas' eyes were fine. "Mr. Rainsworth, what's this about?"
"I know you're tired of being second. I can help you," Nicholas began.
"Really? If you help me, you'll be my benefactor," gratitude filled Magnus's eyes.
Nicholas showed no interest. "But what could you do for me in return?"
Magnus pondered. "What do you desire? I'll help you obtain it."
Nicholas' eyes remained emotionless. "I need nothing. Just listen to me. I'll set up a company for you."
"All right," Magnus exclaimed, overjoyed. He'd become a successful businessman, amassing wealth to show those like Ralph who'd looked down on him.
