Chapter 57: Stand-In for a Blind Date
โHow come Iโve never seen him before?โ
Jonathan spoke up. โMr. Sven is a very mysterious man. He only appears when Mom is in danger.โ
โNo wonder,โ Vivian mused, eating her cake. โWhen you were abroad, I only heard about your bodyguards, but never actually saw them.โ She, too, had bodyguards, but they usually remained within ten meters of her, easily visible. Calvinโs unique status abroad necessitated a team to protect Cecilia and her family.
Ten minutes later, Sven entered, impeccably dressed in a sharp suit. His aura was forbidding. Vivian's eyes widened.
โHandsomeโฆโ she breathed.
Jonathan handed her a tissue. โWipe your mouth.โ
Vivian swallowed nervously. Cecilia knew her friend well. Vivian might seem flighty, but she harbored deep feelings for only one man. For him, at twenty-seven, she remained unmarried and unattached.
โCome in,โ Cecilia said to Sven. โThis is my friend, Vivian. Thereโs no one else here.โ
Sven glanced around the room.
Jonathan said politely, โMr. Sven, Easter is tomorrow; let's celebrate together and have some cake.โ
Svenโs stern features softened slightly.
โNo need, thank you.โ
Cecilia, knowing his preference for solitude, didn't press. She packed some cake for him. โThen let me wish you a happy Easter in advance.โ
โRight, thank you.โ
Sven took the cake and left.
After he departed, Vivian remarked casually, โHe doesnโt seem like a bodyguard at all.โ
โWhat do you mean?โ Cecilia asked.
โItโs just a feeling, hard to articulateโฆโ Cecilia agreed; Sven's demeanor differed from typical bodyguards. Their interactions, spanning several years, had been minimal, mostly functional communication, except for the incident with the drug.
Just then, Vivian's phone rang. It was her father.
โWhatโs the matter?โ she asked.
โYouโre not getting any younger,โ Roland said sternly. โIโve arranged a blind date for you tomorrow morning at nine at the Imperial Garden.โ
Vivianโs face fell. โIโm not going!โ
โDo you think Iโm asking for your opinion?โ Rolandโs voice was sharp. โDonโt forget, everything you have, I gave you! If you donโt want to be part of the Kennedy family, you can leave. This time, regardless of whether you like them or not, you absolutely cannot stand them up. You can only do so if they donโt like you! Donโt disappoint me!โ
Vivian gripped her phone tightly. She often felt powerless. She'd put the call on speakerphone, and Cecilia had overheard.
Vivian sighed. โBut I have plans tomorrowโฆโ She'd planned to meet someone early.
Jonathan interjected. โMom, why donโt you go in Vivianโs place tomorrow?โ
Vivian was startled.
Cecilia asked hesitantly, โCan Iโฆ do that?โ Vivian seemed relieved.
โOf course you can,โ Vivian said. โIโve spent years abroad and rarely returned. Those โsilver-spoonโ kids barely know meโฆโ
Cecilia hesitated. A blind date implied exchanging information. Vivian quickly reassured her.
โDonโt worry,โ Vivian said. โIโve been through this before. Weโre all just pawns in our parentsโ matchmaking games. My dad didnโt even mention who the other party is; you get what I mean? The other party won't know either. It's all for show, to appease our parents.โ
Jonathan looked at Cecilia. โMommy, opportunities like this are rare. If weโre lucky, Eli and I might just get a dad.โ
