Chapter 57: Stand-In for a Blind Date

โ€œHow come Iโ€™ve never seen him before?โ€

Jonathan spoke up. โ€œMr. Sven is a very mysterious man. He only appears when Mom is in danger.โ€

โ€œNo wonder,โ€ Vivian mused, eating her cake. โ€œWhen you were abroad, I only heard about your bodyguards, but never actually saw them.โ€ She, too, had bodyguards, but they usually remained within ten meters of her, easily visible. Calvinโ€™s unique status abroad necessitated a team to protect Cecilia and her family.

Ten minutes later, Sven entered, impeccably dressed in a sharp suit. His aura was forbidding. Vivian's eyes widened.

โ€œHandsomeโ€ฆโ€ she breathed.

Jonathan handed her a tissue. โ€œWipe your mouth.โ€

Vivian swallowed nervously. Cecilia knew her friend well. Vivian might seem flighty, but she harbored deep feelings for only one man. For him, at twenty-seven, she remained unmarried and unattached.

โ€œCome in,โ€ Cecilia said to Sven. โ€œThis is my friend, Vivian. Thereโ€™s no one else here.โ€

Sven glanced around the room.

Jonathan said politely, โ€œMr. Sven, Easter is tomorrow; let's celebrate together and have some cake.โ€

Svenโ€™s stern features softened slightly.

โ€œNo need, thank you.โ€

Cecilia, knowing his preference for solitude, didn't press. She packed some cake for him. โ€œThen let me wish you a happy Easter in advance.โ€

โ€œRight, thank you.โ€

Sven took the cake and left.

After he departed, Vivian remarked casually, โ€œHe doesnโ€™t seem like a bodyguard at all.โ€

โ€œWhat do you mean?โ€ Cecilia asked.

โ€œItโ€™s just a feeling, hard to articulateโ€ฆโ€ Cecilia agreed; Sven's demeanor differed from typical bodyguards. Their interactions, spanning several years, had been minimal, mostly functional communication, except for the incident with the drug.

Just then, Vivian's phone rang. It was her father.

โ€œWhatโ€™s the matter?โ€ she asked.

โ€œYouโ€™re not getting any younger,โ€ Roland said sternly. โ€œIโ€™ve arranged a blind date for you tomorrow morning at nine at the Imperial Garden.โ€

Vivianโ€™s face fell. โ€œIโ€™m not going!โ€

โ€œDo you think Iโ€™m asking for your opinion?โ€ Rolandโ€™s voice was sharp. โ€œDonโ€™t forget, everything you have, I gave you! If you donโ€™t want to be part of the Kennedy family, you can leave. This time, regardless of whether you like them or not, you absolutely cannot stand them up. You can only do so if they donโ€™t like you! Donโ€™t disappoint me!โ€

Vivian gripped her phone tightly. She often felt powerless. She'd put the call on speakerphone, and Cecilia had overheard.

Vivian sighed. โ€œBut I have plans tomorrowโ€ฆโ€ She'd planned to meet someone early.

Jonathan interjected. โ€œMom, why donโ€™t you go in Vivianโ€™s place tomorrow?โ€

Vivian was startled.

Cecilia asked hesitantly, โ€œCan Iโ€ฆ do that?โ€ Vivian seemed relieved.

โ€œOf course you can,โ€ Vivian said. โ€œIโ€™ve spent years abroad and rarely returned. Those โ€˜silver-spoonโ€™ kids barely know meโ€ฆโ€

Cecilia hesitated. A blind date implied exchanging information. Vivian quickly reassured her.

โ€œDonโ€™t worry,โ€ Vivian said. โ€œIโ€™ve been through this before. Weโ€™re all just pawns in our parentsโ€™ matchmaking games. My dad didnโ€™t even mention who the other party is; you get what I mean? The other party won't know either. It's all for show, to appease our parents.โ€

Jonathan looked at Cecilia. โ€œMommy, opportunities like this are rare. If weโ€™re lucky, Eli and I might just get a dad.โ€
