Chapter 278: We Are In Public Here

Casimir looked at Waverly in disbelief. She sure is resourceful, huh? Did she just delegate her burden to Raylee, only to now pass it onto me? Also, does she have no idea how much money that is? I doubt there’s a single wealthy scion out there who could casually fork out thirty billion in cash! I don’t even want to spend three hundred million, let alone three billion!

Before Casimir even had a chance to refuse, Margaret angrily rebuked her, saying, “Waverly, have you lost your mind? Why should my son pay for the birthday gift you’re giving me? My son actually spends his hard-earned money to buy me gifts, and you think you can get by just by paying lip service? If you can’t afford it, then you simply can’t. Why insist on saying that you’d buy it no matter the cost? You’re just trying to keep up appearances by putting on airs! You’ve completely embarrassed me today!”

Margaret was so infuriated that she lost her temper on the spot. Casimir, too, felt utterly embarrassed. He had always considered Waverly to be a woman of great understanding, but this incident had shown him the true meaning of foolishness.

Waverly kept her head down, not daring to meet the eyes of Margaret and Casimir. She covered her mouth, softly sobbing, portraying herself as the victim and shifting the blame onto Raylee by saying, “If it weren’t for Raylee, how would I have thought of buying you the store’s flagship piece, Mom? I’m not the only one at fault here…”

“Stop crying, okay? I can’t believe you’re even trying to push the blame! Was it Raylee who forced you to buy it? We only gave you a piece of advice, suggesting you stop overpromising for the sake of your ego and pride! We didn’t blame you, so why are you crying?” Casimir snapped at her impatiently.

Waverly forced back her tears after hearing that. “Casimir, are you really not mad at me? I won’t make this kind of mistake again in the future. From now on, I’ll make sure to ask about the price before making a purchase!”

“You’re the daughter of the Goodridge family! Do you really need to ask the price when shopping? Isn’t this just like you’re rushing to haggle? But I can’t really blame you. After all, you were raised in the countryside, so it’s normal that you haven’t been exposed to much. I’ll call your mother and ask her to guide you more on how to behave like a prominent young lady and how to be a daughter-in-law of a prestigious family. I don’t want something like this to happen again!” Margaret said, somewhat annoyed.

As these words were spoken, whispers began to ripple through the crowd around.

“So, she grew up in the countryside! No wonder she could utter such embarrassing words and do such shameful things! I’ve truly seen it all!”

“How did someone like her manage to catch the Sutherland family’s eye?”

“Mr. Sutherland must be really hungry; he’s not being picky with his food anymore.”

“The one standing next to her is her sister, right? Their auras are completely different. She truly has the grace of a prominent young lady.”

The fury within Waverly had reached its breaking point. She exploded, yelling furiously at those around her, “What do you all know? I’m the real heiress of the Goodridge family! This person standing before me is nothing but a fake heiress! Her mother was just a housekeeper, who maliciously switched us at birth! It was all because of her! Otherwise, I wouldn’t have had to spend eighteen years in the countryside! It wasn’t my fault so why are you all blaming me? She’s the one you should be pointing fingers at!”

She glared at Raylee with such fury, wishing she could tear her apart right then and there.

Upon seeing Waverly disregarding her image and roaring like a shrew, Margaret was dumbfounded. The people around her were startled by her sudden outburst. Having previously witnessed Waverly’s hysterical behavior, Casimir wasn’t particularly shocked. Nevertheless, he reminded her, “Waverly, don’t forget that we’re in public here. Try to keep your emotions in check.”

Margaret also lectured her, saying, “Exactly! It’s commonly said that one should not air their dirty laundry in public, but look at you… It’s as if you couldn’t wait to broadcast our family’s embarrassing matters on national television! How could a woman like you ever be worthy of my son? I can’t fathom why Mr. Sutherland took a liking to you!”

After she had spoken, Margaret, brimming with anger, stormed off, dragging Casimir along with her.

Waverly glared resentfully at Raylee, demanding an explanation. “You recommended this so-called flagship piece. Were you conspiring with the store manager to rip me off?”

Raylee let out a scoff. “Do you even hear yourself? Charming Jewelry is a globally renowned luxury jewelry store. Anyone who can become a store manager there is exceptional, the cream of the crop. How could I possibly have the audacity to conspire with them against you?”
