Chapter 279: We Are In Deep Trouble
The store manager quickly clarified, โMs. Goodridge, please donโt make unfounded accusations. As the manager, I assure you I would never engage in any illegal activities. If your inappropriate remarks were to cost me my job or tarnish my reputation, I will resort to legal measures to protect myself.โ
โAre you threatening me? Do you take me for a fool? Iโd rather die than believe thereโs nothing between you two! How dare you threaten me? I certainly wonโt let this matter rest!โ Waverly exclaimed in disbelief and hastily left.
She had to strike while the iron was hot and quickly pacify both Margaret and Casimir. She could take her sweet time dealing with Raylee, but the matter concerning Casimir was of paramount importance. After all, she would suffer a tremendous loss if this incident were to affect her marriage into the Sutherland family.
Upon returning home, Raylee found her bodyguard, Plumpy, already waiting. Plumpy stood at a height of six feet and weighed about one hundred and forty pounds. Standing in front of her felt like being in the presence of a human-sized tank, which gave off an overwhelming sense of security.
Originally, the masked man had intended for Plumpy to serve as her personal bodyguard. However, she felt that her size was too conspicuous. Being with her drew too much attention, so he had Plumpy protect her discreetly.
โHowโs the investigation I tasked you with?โ asked Raylee.
โMs. Somers, weโve found out that the woman spreading false rumors about you on the campus network is Mindy Woollen.โ
Plumpy was quite diligent, even going so far as to print out Mindyโs information. She introduced it with utmost seriousness, saying, โShe wasnโt a student at Jexburgh University, but she was often seen there. As for her role, she was Waverlyโs study companion, assistant, and housekeeper. Mindy hailed from a secluded mountain village in Seapolis. She was the third child in her family. Tragedy struck early in her life when her father, a construction worker, met with an unfortunate accident on site and passed away. Due to her familyโs financial struggles, she had to drop out of middle school and start working. She had been a waitress, a salesperson, andโฆ well, her last job was at a nightclub.โ
The capabilities of Plumpy were indeed impressive; she came close to unearthing every single detail about Mindyโs ancestry.
โShe lost her father at a young age? Are you sure?โ Raylee asked.
If that were indeed the case, then Mindyโs previous claims that her father was killed by her biological father were simply nonsense!
โPlease donโt doubt my professional capabilities, Ms. Somers. When it comes to investigating people, Iโm an expert. Give me a name, and I can dig up even the most hidden details about them!โ Plumpy vowed earnestly.
Raylee couldnโt help but laugh. โYouโve done well, Plumpy. Next, find a lawyer and sue her for defamation. Make life as difficult for her as possible! My demands are simple: either face imprisonment, or issue a public apology and provide full compensation.โ
Plumpy confidently patted her chest as she promised, โAll right! Iโll immediately seek out the best legal team in Jexburgh to sue her. Rest assured that we will certainly meet your demands, Ms. Somers!โ
โOh, I feel very assured with you handling things.โ
Within the same day, Mindy made her way to Waverlyโs house in a state of urgency.
โWhatโs the big rush? Iโm really irritated at the moment. If youโre thinking of asking me for money, donโt even bother!โ Waverly didnโt show her any friendliness whatsoever.
After being humiliated in the jewelry store yesterday, she exhausted all possible means and nearly spent all her tears just to elicit a shred of pity from Casimir. However, it wasnโt so easy to fool Margaret. No matter how much she played the victim and wept bitterly, Margaret simply didnโt buy it. She even threatened to make life difficult for Waverly if she were to marry into the Sutherland family. Margaretโs prestige within the Sutherland family was not to be underestimated. If she were to be offended, then Waverlyโs future would become incredibly difficult to navigate. As such, Waverly was thoroughly exasperated at the moment. She had to figure out a way to appease Margaret. By stepping right into the line of fire, Mindy had really put herself in a bind this time, which only served to exacerbate Waverlyโs irritation.
โWaverly, weโre in deep trouble! This is beyond something money can fix. You need to help me, or else Iโm going to end up in prison!โ Mindy exclaimed with a sob in her voice.
โWhatโs so serious this time? Did you get trapped in another high-interest loan? Or did your uncle catch you gambling again? Iโve told you time and again not to gamble, why canโt you, a hopeless gambler, heed my words? Iโm telling you, Iโm broke right now! All I have is my life; you can take it if you want!โ Waverly snapped impatiently.
โWhy would I want your life? This time itโs not about loan sharking or gambling. Itโs about the post we made! Raylee sued us!โ Mindy was on the verge of tears as she continued, โThis morning, a lawyer sent me a demand letter, demanding that I delete my post, apologize, and pay compensation of three hundred million. Otherwise, they threatened to have me rot in prison!โ
