Chapter 73: Standing Up For Her

“You once said you’d help me seek justice. Was I wrong to pursue it myself?” Casimir confronted her directly.

“You were only confined for a few hours; you didn’t suffer much. The hospital is shut down, and Samuel’s been taught a lesson. He’s still in detention. Why can’t you let it go?”

“Lucky? What if my luck had been worse? They could have kept me indefinitely! I could have been ruined!” Raylee growled, furious. She felt like charging at those who twisted right and wrong and knocking them senseless.

Casimir urged, “You won’t be. Samuel said he’d have the doctor regulate the dosage. He won’t let you be ruined! I’ve known him for years; he’s a decent person. He wouldn’t do something so…”

A mocking glint shone in Raylee’s eyes. “It’s natural you’d defend him—you’re buddies. But you said you’d help me seek justice. Mr. Sutherland, how exactly do you plan to assist me? By playing peacemaker? You get to be the good guy while I bear the brunt. How does Samuel, the source of all this trouble, get off scot-free?” A smile played on her lips.

Men were liars, yet she remembered Casimir’s words.

Casimir looked down, sensing her sarcasm. Embarrassed, he tugged at his tie. “Do you think everyone’s like that madman, Jeremiah, ready to shoot at the slightest provocation? Or do you appreciate such immature, impulsive, childish methods of retaliation?”

Raylee countered, “I won’t judge Jeremiah, but he helped me. What about you, Mr. Sutherland? All you do is talk, sweeping things under the rug.”

Casimir’s face darkened. “You’ve fallen for Jeremiah, haven’t you? They were right—the Lorimer marriage went to your head. You got full of yourself, acting high and mighty.”

The argument was pointless, leaving Raylee with a headache. Turning to Waverly, she asked, “Are you feeling better?”

Fearing Raylee’s disapproval, Waverly quickly shook her head. “I’m fine, Raylee.”

“Really?”

Waverly nodded. Raylee’s expression was ambiguous—a smile, a smirk. “Since you’re fine, you might as well continue your stay at the detention center. You agreed to this, in front of your mother, to stay with Samuel for a week!”

Waverly nodded, tears streaming down her face. “Raylee, I’ll go. Don’t worry, I won’t go back on my word.” She retreated, leaving Casimir with a feeling of reluctance.

Chapter 73: Standing Up For Her (Continued)

“Waverly, are you sure you can handle the detention center? Is your health up to it?”

Waverly was deeply moved. “No matter the difficulties, I can persevere because of your care.”

Casimir patted her shoulder. “If you can’t bear it, let me know. I’ll stand up for you!”

His words stunned her. She almost doubted her hearing. Casimir had always been lukewarm, rarely showing concern. Especially after her birthday attempt to strengthen their bond, he’d been almost indifferent. He hadn’t broken off the engagement, and she’d accepted that as their co-existence. Only his repeated affection for Raylee had sparked her jealousy. She’d never imagined him standing up for her. Had the tables turned?

Hope blossomed; she couldn’t hide her joy. Then, she glanced at Raylee, quickly reverting to a pitiful demeanor. “Casimir, thank you. But I don’t want you to be upset with Raylee because of me, so I should go. If you truly cherish and pity me, may I make a small request?”
