Chapter 713: Is He the Police?
Olive sat quietly, observing Naomi without speaking. Naomi curled her fingers, sensing Olive's perceptive gaze preventing her from making eye contact.
"Sister Olive, don't misunderstand, my big brother and Iโฆ" Naomi began timidly.
Olive's eyebrows furrowed instantly. Interrupting with a smile, she asked, "Huh? Big brother?"
Naomi was stunned. Olive continued, "Naomi, you said I shouldn't misunderstand, so why are you referring to Elvis as your big brother? You're not deaf, are you? Mr. Augustine said he doesn't have a sister!" Olive then looked at Elvis, asking, "Or do you?"
Elvis, standing beside Olive, his tall frame imposing, kept his narrow, deep eyes fixed on her. "No, I don't," he replied.
Naomi's face paled further. Olive's pointed words were clearly humiliating, and Elvis wisely refrained from escalating the situation. Peterson stood respectfully behind Olive. Although Olive and Elvis lacked marriage certificates, the Augustine family and Elvis's associates considered Olive his wife.
Naomi shivered, her watery eyes brimming with tears, appearing pitifully vulnerable. She whispered, "Sister Olive, Mr. Augustine and I are not what you think. I'm from a poor family with several younger brothers. To support their schooling, my parents sold me to the thug, Clement Adonis, and forced us to marry. Butโฆbutโฆ"
Naomi looked up at Elvis, ashamed to admit, "We haven't consummated the marriage. I'm still a virgin."
Peterson found her statement repugnant. No one truly cared about her virginity, yet she flaunted it to Elvis, hoping to evoke sympathy and portray herself as a selfless sister sacrificing for her family.
Elvis's handsome face remained impassive. He didn't even glance at Naomi, feigning indifference.
Olive clapped slowly, a smile illuminating her bright eyes. "Naomi, continue your speech. I'm listening."
Naomi detected the nonchalance in Olive's voice. She curled her fingers, continuing, "Clement became abusive when I didn't comply. He enjoyed beating me at the slightest provocation."
Naomi was a skilled storyteller; her voice choked with emotion, her red nose twitching, and tears welling in her eyes. Ideally, Elvis or Peterson would offer a tissue, but Elvis remained expressionless, while Peterson stared at Naomi with disdain.
After a moment, Naomi wiped her tears and continued, "It rained heavily the other day. I was hit by Mr. Augustine's car. He took me back, and I stayed overnight. The next morning, he gave me his number in case I needed help."
"When I returned, I ran into Clement. He took me to the Express Hotel and abused me again. So, I called Mr. Augustine."
"Sister Olive, you know what happened. Please don't misunderstand and quarrel with Mr. Augustine because of me."
Naomi concluded her performance, looking at Olive with a pitiful expression.
Olive listened patiently, then tilted her head. "You're finished? I have a few questions."
Surprised, Naomi nodded, "Yes, Sister Olive, please ask."
"Naomi, besides Mr. Augustine's number, are you aware of a number called 911?"
Peterson stifled a laugh, quickly covering his mouth. Naomi froze.
Olive smiled, "Naomi, despite your humble background, your legal education should inform you that reporting to the police is crucial in combating domestic violence. Why did you call Mr. Augustine instead?"
She added playfully, "Somehow, I suspect this 'domestic violence' conveniently gave you an excuse to call Mr. Augustine."
Naomi was speechless, taken aback by Olive's directness. Olive continued, "Naomi, I sympathize with your tragic life. Clement is a scoundrel, but you married him for his money. Now you highlight your virginity while still benefiting from Clement. How ungrateful."
Naomi stammered, "Sister Olive, that's not true. I didn't marry him voluntarily. My parentsโฆ"
Olive interrupted, "So, they tied you to the Civil Affairs Bureau?"
Naomi fell silent.
Olive concluded, "If your parents didn't force you, then you chose this fate. Everyone pays for their choices. Since you're married to Clement, and if your marriage is legal, then he paid for your body. Why not comply? Because you chose this path."
