Chapter 127: Roses and Thorns

Jonathan had made it crystal clear: she could rely on him, and he could be her protector.

It was just Kason, after all; if he wanted, dealing with him would take only a minute. Yet, she stubbornly refused to lean on him! Suppressing his darker thoughts, Jonathan instructed, “Call me the moment you sense danger; nothing is more important than your safety!”

“Okay!”

With Jonathan’s words, Sierra felt more assured. Two days later, when Kason called again, she didn’t ignore it but finally answered. Kason sounded relieved. “You finally picked up! If you hadn’t answered, I was about to come and find you. Sierra, let’s meet up.”

“Sure, let’s meet at the institute; I was about to head over anyway.”

When Sierra arrived at the institute, Kason was already there, dressed to the nines, holding a bouquet of roses, waiting outside.

“Why aren’t you going in?”

“I can’t bring roses inside, but I wanted them to be the first thing you saw.”

Kason was smooth with his romantic words; handing over the roses, he pleaded, “Don’t be mad at me anymore, okay?”

Sierra glanced at him, took the flowers from his hands, and casually set them aside, stating bluntly, “I don’t like that he’s all talk and no action.”

“That’s just how he is; you really scared him that day.” Kason’s eyes sparkled with intensity as he spoke. “Sierra, you really surprised me! Your friend—a biochemistry genius, with such skills and character—she was beyond his expectations. She had been in prison for three years, and he hadn’t known! It seems Shane hid her well!”

Seeing the intrigue in his eyes, Sierra knew she was halfway there. Seizing the moment, she said, “Actually, there’s something I’d like your help with.”

“Go ahead!”

Kason thought Sierra would bring up Brendan, but she spoke about the lab instead. “I’ve rented it for three months, and that’s almost up; can I continue the lease?”

Surprised at first, Kason quickly said, “Of course! You can use it as long as you want.”

“Once we’re engaged, this will be your property too.” Then, changing tack, Kason asked, “Sierra, can we get engaged first?” He was getting impatient!

Sierra tilted her chin up, looking a bit proud. She glanced at Kason. “Engaged? I don’t think it’s time yet.”

“At least, you haven’t made my heart flutter yet.” Saying this, Sierra lightly tapped Kason’s chest. “Step up your game!”

Unable to contain himself, he grabbed Sierra’s hand, dropping all pretense of gentility; his eyes filled with undisguised desire. “When the time comes, you won’t be allowed to regret it!” As she spoke, he withdrew her hand.

Suppressing the urge to wash her hands, she said coolly, “I’m heading to the lab now; do as you please.” With that, she turned and entered the lab. The more she acted like this, the more Kason’s heart itched; he felt like a part of his body was about to explode.

He hadn’t even left the institute when he impatiently made a phone call. “Hello, it’s me; are you back yet? Send someone over, the usual price. And make it someone with a fiery temperament!” As he was about to hang up, something occurred to him, and he said, “Such a fine thing, why not keep hiding it?”

The person on the other end was Shane, who chuckled lightly at the desire in Kason’s voice, his eyes filled with disdain. “Things are meant to be shared. I’ll remind you, every rose has its thorns; be careful not to crash.”

Kason didn’t take Shane’s words to heart. Looking at the dewy rose left aside, he said nonchalantly, “If it has thorns, just pluck them out. Besides, it’s the thorns that make it exciting!”

Shane said no more and hung up. After a while, he made another call, asked a couple of questions, then hung up again. His man had already made contact with Dickson as arranged, but it seemed to have had no effect.
