Chapter 179: Past Pains
“Jonathan, what are you doing?” Sierra finally spoke, prompting Jonathan to look up at her calmly and say, “That scumbag touched you just now.”
Sierra froze, startled by Jonathan’s words and the unmistakable ferocity in his eyes. “Jonathan!” she exclaimed, unable to contain herself.
Jonathan closed his eyes, took a deep breath, tossed the wipe he was holding, and leaned in towards Sierra’s swollen lips again. Sierra felt like her lips weren’t her own anymore—they hurt; they felt numb. She couldn’t help but look down at Jonathan, who was still obsessively wiping her hands. She didn’t realize a person could be so fixated on cleanliness. The heavy mood surrounding Jonathan hadn’t dissipated; it was clear he was still upset. Sierra quickly changed the subject. “Did you manage to track the location? Did you get it on camera?”
She had been terrified moments ago, worried that her earrings would be discovered, but they had proved more reliable than she expected and hadn’t been detected. “I was always close by,” she added. For fear of being discovered, he had parked the car in a concealed spot, capturing everything on camera. During the security check, Mateo had turned off all tracking, making them appear as ordinary earrings.
“This equipment was made by a friend of mine; you can’t buy it anywhere. Ordinary devices can’t detect it!” Jonathan briefly explained. The gear was supplied exclusively by military intelligence; ordinary people couldn’t get their hands on it.
“Do we have enough to bring him to justice now?” Sierra asked, then shook her head, answering her own question. “No, that won’t work! If it gets discovered, everything there will self-destruct!” Then we’d have nothing.
“Forget about it for now; just rest a bit,” Jonathan advised.
Sierra was indeed exhausted. The back-and-forth with Kason had left her completely tense, and once she relaxed, she felt overwhelmingly tired, yet she couldn’t sleep. The day’s events had shocked her too much. Although she hadn’t seen the Hurhan experiments firsthand, she could imagine them. In Kason’s eyes, those people’s lives weren’t worth anything. The videos Shane had shown her were just the opening act.
Wait, the videos! Sierra suddenly sat upright, blurting out, “Kason’s office has surveillance equipment. If we could find it and hack into it, could we gather more evidence of his crimes?” She hadn’t thought of this before, but it now occurred to her.
“In theory, yes! But why would he install cameras in his own office?” Jonathan was skeptical that Kason would be that foolish.
“It wasn’t him; someone else placed them there. I saw videos of him torturing girls in that office!” Sierra unwittingly revealed something she had kept hidden.
“Videos? What videos?” Jonathan’s eyebrows lifted as he looked at her, and Sierra realized her slip-up. After hesitating, she decided not to hide it anymore and explained Kason’s behavior in the videos; he clearly didn’t know about the cameras. So, he definitely wouldn’t be cautious. Maybe he’ll talk about something in his office if…
She was interrupted by Jonathan before she could finish. “Shane? Why would he show you those things?” Suddenly thinking of something, his expression darkened. “That day in the car, he showed you these?”
Jonathan was too sharp; knowing a little could lead him to figure out everything. Sierra could only nod in admission. “Yes, that day in the car, I saw Kason torturing someone from the prison.”
Jonathan’s expression turned grim instantly. He knew exactly what Sierra meant by torturing, and the idea that Shane had let Sierra watch such a thing with him was unsettling. He had heard of the infamous reputation of the Goodman family; he had ignored them before since they hadn’t crossed paths with him, but now it was different. The thought that Shane had shown Sierra such vile content made him want to do something sinister.
Sierra noticed Jonathan’s mood shift and couldn’t help but glance at him. Sensing her gaze, Jonathan closed his eyes to mask the darkness in his look, and then finally said, “Tell me everything about Shane in detail, Sierra. Don’t hold anything back this time.”
