Chapter 206
The teacher seemed to be deliberately provoking Asher. He couldn't understand the Langstons' opposition to Lemira attending Orvin University. "Are they insane?" he wondered quietly.
Asher's face instantly soured. "Haven't I already rejected Orvin University's admissions officer?"
"But it's Lemira's dream," the teacher countered. "She deserves to make her own choices. Her family shouldn't stand in her way."
"No way," Asher insisted. "I won't allow it! With your temperament, you'd only cause trouble at Orvin. Who would help you? Staying local is best for you."
Evelina, upon hearing Lemira might attend Orvin, felt a surge of envy. Why couldn't she get in, while Lemira seemed to do so effortlessly? She echoed Asher's concerns, feigning concern, "Yeah, Lemmy, stay here with me. It's better with family around. Why leave everything behind for a place so far away?"
Lemira smirked. "For someone who couldn't even get into community college, Orvin University would be a daydream. Expect me to stoop to your level? Don't you feel shameless?"
Evelina was speechless, her face flushing crimson.
The admissions officer approached Asher, shaking his hand. "Mr. Langston, your sister is truly exceptional. It would be a shame if she didn't attend Orvin University."
Asher stiffened. Lemira's sudden academic success was as surprising to him as to anyone else. He said coldly, "But we've always kept our children close to home. Orvin University isn't the right fit for her."
Lemira's tone was impassive. "Have you forgotten? I signed a severance agreement yesterday. I'm no longer a Langston. You have no say in my future!"
Asher felt his pride wounded. "Lemira, getting cocky, aren't you? Think you're something special because you aced an exam? You'll still need the Langston family after graduation!"
The admissions officer quickly released Asher's hand, turning to Lemira. "You don't need to worry about employment, Lemira. Orvin University has an excellent reputation."
An admissions officer, ensuring Asher heard, muttered, "To think of putting a top scorer and a community college student in the same school...what favoritism! What a nutcase!"
This only intensified Asher's anger towards Lemira. "Now are you satisfied, Lemira? What's there to be proud of?"
Lemira's lips curled slightly. "Well, being the top student in the city is rather satisfying. Unlike some, who couldn't even cheat their way to a passing grade."
Evelina's face reddened with anger. "I didn't cheat! Judy begged to copy my answers!"
The teacher, exasperated, asked, "Did Judy come?"
A plain-looking middle-aged couple approached, their eyes shrewd. "Judy admitted to cheating. She was too ashamed to come to school and ran away. We're here to apologize on her behalf."
Something felt amiss to Lemira. She secretly glanced at Evelina, whose expression remained unnervingly calm, as if she had anticipated this. Was Wendy's situation repeating itself?
Lemira spoke directly. "I think Judy herself should come to school to take responsibility." She suspected Evelina might have bribed Judy's parents to lie for her.
