“Luck is a form of strength, too,” Lemira retorted before turning on her heel and leaving. Asher was fuming. “I shouldn’t have come today!”
Evelina felt a twinge of happiness. “It’s my fault for telling you about this. I was hoping that with you coming to school, you could make up with Lemira, and we could all live together like before. But I didn’t expect Lemira to be so unappreciative!”
“How can you say that, Evelina? Lemira isn’t unappreciative; it’s just that she doesn’t need us to be alright.”
Alaric found Evelina’s words somewhat off-putting. It didn’t sit right with him.
Evelina trod lightly. “Alaric, did I say something wrong again?”
Asher quickly intervened. “Eve, it’s not your fault. Lemira’s stubbornness is to blame. I can’t wait for the day she can’t handle her affairs. Let’s see what she does then!”
Evelina hung her head, feeling wronged. “I won’t make decisions on my own anymore to avoid misunderstandings.”
Asher turned to Alaric. “What’s with you? Don’t be like your cousin Lucian.”
Alaric felt unjustly accused. He hadn’t said anything wrong. Evelina’s remark was indeed inappropriate! Why did it seem like it was all his fault? Watching Evelina support Asher as they left, Alaric felt an inexplicable annoyance. Lately, he was feeling conflicted, noticing a change in Evelina.
