Chapter 401

Lemira couldnโ€™t help but scoff when she spotted Evelina eyeing Matthew as if he were the golden ticket to a better life. So she wants to climb the social ladder now? Lemira deliberately kept her distance. โ€œWeโ€™re not exactly close, you know.โ€

Evelinaโ€™s face faltered, painting a picture of sorrow. โ€œLemmy, weโ€™ve grown up together, even though I was only adopted. Even if you hate me, Iโ€™ve always seen you as my own sister.โ€

Lemiraโ€™s lips twitched in annoyance. Here we go again with the drama.

Evelina, having played her victim card, then turned to Matthew. โ€œMr. Everhart, Iโ€™m sorry you had to see this. Lemmy always thinks Iโ€™m after her brother, but thatโ€™s not true.โ€

Matthew raised an eyebrow. โ€œIf Lemira doesnโ€™t like you, maybe you should take the hint and keep your distance.โ€

He had made up his mind; if his sister-in-law didnโ€™t like this woman, neither did he.

Evelinaโ€™s face stiffened, surprised by Matthewโ€™s blunt dismissal. Damn it, why wasnโ€™t her usual tactic working on him?

Lemira watched Evelina, barely hiding her amusement. โ€œDid you really think you could fool everyone like you did the Langstons?โ€

Evelina struggled to maintain her faรงade in front of Matthew. โ€œLemmy, Lucian is in ICU, and Alaricโ€™s been detained. His team is on the brink of disbandment, facing a massive penalty for breaching their sponsorship contract. Donโ€™t you care about your family at all?โ€

She aimed to tarnish Lemiraโ€™s image in front of Matthew, refusing to let Lemira outshine her.

Lemira snorted. โ€œIโ€™ve cut ties with the Langstons a long time ago.โ€

โ€œLemmy, when will you stop being so stubborn? Lucian harmed himself because of you. Donโ€™t you feel bad for him?โ€ Evelina continued her act, hoping to gain the sympathy of the men around them.

Soon, a bulky man in team colors approached Evelina. โ€œGoddess Eve, youโ€™re just too kind. Youโ€™ve done enough for the Langstons as their foster child.โ€

Evelina barely concealed her disdain for the unattractive man, but since he was defending her, sheโ€™d use it to her advantage. She wiped her tears, looking pitifully at Lemira. โ€œI know you hate me, but Lucian really cares about you. Heโ€™s even willing to give you the company as compensation. Please, visit him in the hospital for me.โ€

The man immediately sympathized with Evelina. He lashed out at Lemira. โ€œYouโ€™re heartless, not even visiting your own brother in the hospital. Eve has been the one running around taking care of everything.โ€

โ€œI do it because I should, but I really hope Lemira would visit him,โ€ Evelina said, turning her tearful eyes to Matthew. โ€œMr. Everhart, since youโ€™re friends with Lemmy, could you please talk to her?โ€

Evelina hoped Matthew would see Lemira as the ungrateful one, while she played the role of the compassionate sister.

However, Matthew, aware of Lemiraโ€™s estrangement from her family and the favoritism shown to Evelina, sided with Lemira.

โ€œI do have something to say,โ€ Matthew began, to Evelinaโ€™s temporary delight. โ€œI think Lemira should stay as far away from the Langstons as possible.โ€

Evelina was stunned, her scheme unraveling. Matthewโ€™s disdain was clear. โ€œWho said I was doing this for you? At the championship backstage, I heard everything. How you guilt-tripped Lemira. Stop playing the saint.โ€ Evelina tried to intervene as Matthew confronted the man defending her. โ€œMr. Everhart, please, thereโ€™s no need for violence on my account.โ€

โ€œWhoโ€™s fighting for you? Are you delusional? You and your moral high ground can take a hike,โ€ Matthew retorted, his patience worn thin by the charade.
