Asher stepped right in front of Evelina, blocking her from Lucian’s tirade. “Lucian, that’s way out of line. Eve’s dad died trying to save our parents. We owe it to her to take care of her.”

“Yeah, and I was nice to Evelina before, but it turns out she’s just an ungrateful snake!”

Lucian really regretted letting the fox into the henhouse. He never should have agreed to Asher’s idea of bringing Evelina back to the Langston household.

Evelina, hiding behind Asher, said with a quivering voice, “Asher, I know Lucian doesn’t like me. Maybe it’s best if I just leave, so I don’t cause any more trouble.”

Just then, the police showed up, and Evelina wanted to make herself scarce. But the cop said, “Hold on, you can’t leave yet. You mentioned you were injured and needed to go to the hospital for a check-up. We still need your statement.”

Evelina’s face fell. “I… I’ve already told you everything I know, which is nothing.”

“But the victim, Lemira, claims it was you who instigated Caspian, provoking him to violence.”

“I didn’t do any such thing. Lemira’s always had it out for me, so of course she’d point the finger. But I don’t blame her. Still, you can’t just accuse people without proof.”

Evelina turned to Asher, tears welling in her eyes. “Asher, you believe me, right?”

Asher nodded. “Of course, I believe you. But don’t worry, just cooperate with the investigation. If you’ve done nothing wrong, then there’s nothing to fear.”

Evelina stiffened. She was scared they’d find something. She was not keen on cooperating.

Lucian asked the officer, “Did Lemira mention any proof?”

“Yes, she claims there’s a video recording on Evelina’s phone, so we’ll need to check it.”

Evelina stepped back in panic. “I don’t have it.”

The officer said, “Please hand over your phone for inspection.”

Lucian snatched Evelina’s phone from her hand, unlocked it, and handed it over to the officer. Evelina just looked down, a cold smile playing on her lips. After a previous close call with surveillance footage, she was extra careful. There was no way she’d leave such damning evidence on her phone. Once she showed Caspian the video, she deleted it immediately.

Lucian was getting impatient. “Are you going to confess, or should we wait for the officer to find out?”

Evelina kept her head down. “I haven’t done anything. What’s there to confess?”

Soon enough, the officer finished checking the phone and handed it back to Evelina. “We didn’t find the video Lemira mentioned.”

Asher glared at Lucian. “Told you Eve wasn’t capable of such a thing. You’re just biased against her.”

Evelina breathed a sigh of relief. “Asher, don’t be mad at Lucian. He’s just worried, that’s all.”

“Evelina, don’t play the innocent with me. Just because you deleted the video early doesn’t mean you’re off the hook. Once Caspian’s awake, we’ll get his side of the story. You think you can cover this up?”

Lucian was beside himself with frustration. No matter what he said, Asher refused to believe him, convinced of Evelina’s innocence.

Just then, Caspian woke up. He looked around and groaned, “It hurts… get me a mirror.”

Evelina rushed to his side. “Caspian, you’re finally awake. You had us all scared. Asher and Lucian were so worried.”

Caspian, struggling to sit up, demanded, “I said I want a mirror, didn’t you hear?” He was terrified his face was ruined. It absolutely couldn’t be!

Evelina, tears streaming down her face, said, “Caspian, the doctor said your face can be fixed. Please, don’t be angry, and don’t blame Lemmy.”

“Where is Lemira? I’m going to kill her!”
