Chapter 488

Matthew spoke up one afternoon, and the moment he saw the color drain from Asherโ€™s face, he knew his suspicions were right. Orion, upon hearing the news, massaged his temples, equally taken aback.

โ€œBro, you can just handle this directly, canโ€™t you? But Mom and Grandma seem to be against you two, and if Grandma has already put in a word with the Waverlies, I doubt your influence will do much good.โ€

โ€œDonโ€™t worry about Mom and Grandma; just keep an eye on them for me.โ€

โ€œYou got it, bro. Iโ€™m on your side, down with this whole arranged marriage nonsense! But sticking around home means I canโ€™t make any extra cash on the side, and Iโ€™m running a bit tight.โ€

โ€œIโ€™ll increase the limit on your card.โ€

โ€œThanks, bro. Youโ€™re the best, I swear. Mission will be accomplished.โ€

Seeing the limit on his card increased, Matthew couldnโ€™t help but beam with joy. Time to pick up a new ride!

After leaving the gaming team base, Lemira returned to her dorm, completely exhausted. Janice tried to comfort her: โ€œAsherโ€™s gone too far, using every dirty trick in the book just to set you back. You nearly died that day.โ€

โ€œIโ€™ll figure something out, donโ€™t worry.โ€

โ€œIt just irks me, you know? With all the brothers you have, yet Evelina, that driverโ€™s daughter, took everything from you.โ€

โ€œIโ€™ve stopped letting it get to me. I can do just fine on my own. Screw this so-called familial bond.โ€

No sooner had Lemira finished her declaration than her new roommate chimed in, โ€œI donโ€™t agree. Family is important. No matter what happens, itโ€™s all about sticking together.โ€

Lemira glanced back at her new roommate, โ€œThatโ€™s true for most families, but some arenโ€™t worth it.โ€

โ€œYou have no idea what Lemiraโ€™s been through,โ€ Janice interjected defensively.

โ€œLetโ€™s not argue about this.โ€

Lemira didnโ€™t want to discuss her relationship with the Langston family in front of an outsider. Those who donโ€™t believe her story wouldnโ€™t start now. She didnโ€™t need their validation to live her life.

Recalling something Caspian had mentioned, she decided to give Lucian a call, only to find his phone turned off. With no classes the next morning, Lemira headed straight to the hospital to find Lucian, the most credible witness she had. But when she arrived, Lucianโ€™s room was empty. The doctor informed her that Lucian had been transferred to another hospital.

Could Asher have really moved him closer to Rowan, as Caspian suggested?

โ€œLemira, I knew youโ€™d come to the hospital today,โ€ Caspian said, still in his patientโ€™s gown, face masked.

โ€œWhereโ€™s he now?โ€

โ€œHeโ€™s been transferred. Lucian had a huge fight with Asher about the medical orders and was forcibly moved by Asherโ€™s people the next day. Even I donโ€™t know where he is now.โ€

As Lemira looked around the empty room, she realized Asher had acted faster than she anticipated.

โ€œIt seems Asher has invested quite a bit in your company,โ€ she remarked.

โ€œTrue, but it hadnโ€™t been profitable until the script you wrote made our recent TV series a hit. And with the movie coming out in a few months, weโ€™ll finally be in the black.โ€

Caspian then added, โ€œThereโ€™s a screenwritersโ€™ meet-up tonight. Asherโ€™s bringing Evelina himself; if you donโ€™t show up, your hard work will all be credited to Evelina.โ€

โ€œAnd how are you any different? Playing the good guy now?โ€

Lemira was clearly unimpressed. Caspianโ€™s expression turned awkward: โ€œI admit, I was intentionally making things difficult for you, trying to get under your skin. Now, itโ€™s clear I was just as much a fool for Evelinaโ€™s games. But we need to reclaim whatโ€™s ours!โ€

Lemira looked at him squarely: โ€œI have one condition.โ€

She didnโ€™t trust Caspian one bit.
