Chapter 89
Lemira overturned the dinner table and casually wiped her hands. Alaric, witnessing this uncharacteristic outburst, exclaimed, "Lemira, have you lost your mind?" She had never acted like this before; she even used a lighter to set Evelina's belongings on fire! It was completely unlike her.
Lemira kicked a chair aside, her voice indifferent and impatient. "You're all too noisy! If you don't want to eat, then let's not eat at all!" Her patience was exhausted. She couldn't bear watching Evelina's pretense any longer; it was nauseating. Evelina immediately burst into tears, crying, "It's all my fault! I'm the real sinner here!"
"Eve, you're too kind. If anyone should leave, it's her!" Lemira readily agreed. "Fine, I'll leave!" Having achieved her objective, she saw no reason to stay. Lucian instantly objected, "No, Lemira, you can't leave. This is your home. Where else could you go?"
Alaric sneered, "Lucian, just cancel her credit cards and let's see how long she lasts on her own!"
Lemira remained unfazed. The memory of her credit cards being canceled in her previous life, leaving her destitute and nearly begging on the streets, was unforgettable. A person truly needed to earn their own living.
She returned to her room, packed a small backpack with a few clothes and her ID, leaving everything else behind. Lucian panicked. "Lemira, don't listen to Alaric's nonsense. Didn't you say you'd come back after your exams?"
Lemira's gaze was calm. "Yes, I did." She had only said that to prevent Lucian and Alaric from taking drastic action that could affect her exams. Now that her exams were over, nothing could hinder her. Why should she continue to suffer?
Lucian pleaded, "Lemira, we're family. Blood is thicker than water. Any misunderstandings aren't insurmountable. I know I've been unfair to you, and I will make it up to you." He had spent a sleepless night, tormented by guilt. From the moment Evelina joined them, Lemira had been mistreated, a fact he had long avoided confronting.
Lemira smiled serenely. "Lucian, don't say that. I plan to find a part-time job and learn to live independently. Let Evelina have my room. After all, her father saved my life. It's only right to treat her well."
Alaric scoffed, "Hmph, you should have done that a long time ago." He seemed to believe she was still afraid of severing ties with him.
Lemira continued, "Now that the exams are over, Evelina can continue with her team training. She is a Langston, after all. It wouldn't be fair to exclude her."
Alaric struggled to compose himself. "O-Of course, I'll make arrangements."
Lemira nodded. "Good. I'll be leaving then. We'll be in touch if anything comes up."
Without looking back, Lemira left the house. Alaric panicked. "Lucian, are you really letting her go?"
Lucian offered a wry smile. "What else can I do? You were the one who told her to leave, weren't you? You were the one who wanted to sever ties with her?"
"I was just angry!"
"Alaric, hurtful words can't be so easily retracted." The damage was done, irreparable. Lucian saw in Alaric a reflection of his former self. Evelina, sensing the shift in Lucian's mood, quickly offered, "Lucian, I'll move out. Then maybe you can convince Lemira to come back." Lucian shook his head. "No need. You stay for now." Solving the issue with Lemira wasn't as simple as Evelina moving out.
Lucian made a statement, “Lucian, I’ve made up my mind. Thank you for taking care of me all these years.”
Evelina turned to pack her things, realizing Lucian’s rapid change in attitude. If she didn’t act now, Lucian would definitely grow suspicious.
