Julie instinctively reached out to grab the photo but failed. It fell to the ground. She bent down to pick it up, but Zayn raised his foot and ruthlessly stomped on it. "So, this is what you care about? Who's in the photo?"
It was clear he hadn't seen the person in the photo. Julie swallowed hard and forced her voice to remain calm. "No one. If you want the water, you can have it. Just open the door, I want to leave."
Zayn chuckled. "I know you too well, Jules." The more she cared about something, the calmer she was. He bent down to pick up the photo from beneath his foot. Then, he glanced at the writing on the back of the photo and softly read, "From Jules to my dearest Luce. It's the 103rd day of me wanting to marry you." The sentence ended with a little doodle of a heart shape.
Zayn flipped the photo to reveal a young man standing under a maple tree, smiling brightly at the camera. If his memory served him right, that was the maple tree at their school. He demanded, "?" His lips twitched slightly as his fingers gripped the photo.
Frightened, her mind went utterly blank. She never expected things to escalate to this extent. She thought that even if she and Zayn went their separate ways in the future, things wouldn't end so terribly. They might have been able to part on civil terms, but now, it seemed there was no going back.
Zayn coated, "Julie, who the hell is this guy?" As shocked by electricity, Julie reached out and snatched the photo back to shove it into her pocket. "I'm sorry for what happened, Zayn. Let's just call it even and move on."
Zayn's entire body trembled with rage, but in the end, he let out a low, bitter laugh. "Don't tell me you've been using me as some kind of substitute."
Julie said nothing, so he shouted again, "Say something! I'm telling you to talk! Are you fucking deaf?" Julie flinched at his roughness. Deep down, she cursed under her breath, "What a lunatic. What is he losing his mind for?"
Suddenly, there was a thunderous bang on the door. Julie felt she had seen her way out of this and immediately shouted, "Someone's here! Open the door!" A smile curled at Zayn's lips. "You think opening the door will save you? Tell me who that man is, or I'll make sure he disappears without a trace."
His bloodshot eyes burned with madness, and as he spoke, he clenched his teeth as if to devour her whole. The sight struck Julie with the realization that Zayn had completely lost his sanity. She desperately pounded on the door and screamed at the top of her lungs, "Help me! Somebody, please help me!"
As her cries faded, a familiar male voice came from outside. "Zayn, open the door. What are you two doing in there?" The moment Julie recognized the voice as Hans', her heart sank to rock bottom. Hans was Zayn's close friend, so how could he possibly help her?
Zayn thought the same, so when he opened the door, he blocked Julie behind him and let Hans in. Once Hans stepped inside, he was stunned by the scene before him. The living room looked like it had been ravaged by a storm, and not a single piece of furniture was intact. He shot a glance at Julie before immediately looking away. "What happened? What are you going mad about this time?"
