Chapter 74
“Mr. Chandler told me about it,” evaded Amaya. “Blaine Chandler?” asked Julie. Amaya nodded. “Was he the one who drove you home last night?” Julie questioned further. “Who cares?” was the flippant reply. Jokingly, Julie began, “You two—” Before she could finish, Amaya interrupted, “Stop spouting nonsense! I’m free from the shackles of love now, and I’m not going to date anymore.” The corners of Julie’s lips twitched in amusement, clearly not quite believing her. “I’m serious!” exclaimed Amaya. “Don’t think of dating me; I should just stay single and focus on my career. I’ll be checking out possible workspaces today.” Julie felt rather speechless. “Why are you so impulsive?” “I’m not! I thought about it all night yesterday,” Amaya replied defensively. “This time, all I want to do is focus on my career, not men.” Amaya did not own a lot, so a single suitcase was enough to hold her belongings. Julie looked at the figures on the table and asked casually, “Don’t you want these things anymore?” Amaya nodded. “They’re not mine, after all. Let’s go.” “Does that ex-boyfriend of yours know that you’re moving out?” asked Julie. Amaya shook her head. “He doesn’t.” “Didn’t you chat about these things then? Isn’t this house rented?” Amaya sighed, then replied, “Forget it. I’ll inform you about it, alright?” With that said, she retrieved her phone from the table and dialed the number from just now. The dial tone rang for quite a while. Just as Amaya assumed that nobody was going to pick up, the voice of a woman responded from the other end. “Hello, who is this?” Amaya paused for a moment before regaining her senses and replying, “Is Christian there? I have some business with him.” “He’s currently in the shower. You could also let me know what you want to tell him and I’ll pass the message along.” As she listened to the woman’s voice, Amaya asked curiously, “Who are you? Are you his girlfriend?” The other party did not reply, which Amaya took as confirmation. The corners of her lips curved upward. She had clearly already guessed it, but she had asked anyway. “Please let him know that I’ll be moving out, and that he can retrieve his things if he wants to. The lease on the house expires at the end of the month.” After saying her piece, she hung up. Seeing this, Julie stood up and asked curiously, “Who picked up the call?” “His girlfriend,” replied Amaya. “Let’s go home.” Half an hour later, Julie and Amaya dragged Amaya’s suitcase into her new house.
Looking around at the large, 200-square-meter flat, Julie could not help but lament, “My dear sister at heart, you have such a large house to yourself, so why did you have to rent such a small apartment with someone else?” “It was close to his university,” explained Amaya. Then, as if she had suddenly thought of something, she continued, “How about you move in with me, Julie?” Julie rejected her offer without even thinking about it. “Forget it,” she said. “After living in the same dormitory for so many years, I’d still prefer to have my own private living space.” Amaya clicked her tongue. “True, you certainly do need your own private space for when Mr. Fuller visits you. But I’d advise you not to treat him as a substitute, because that’s just morally wrong.” “I’m not treating him as a substitute,” Julie mumbled quietly. “We’ve known each other for a long time.” Amaya was shocked. “You’ve known each other for—” “We’ve known each other since junior high.” “How come I never knew about that?” Amaya said nothing in reply. Instead, she just gazed steadily at Julie, who rolled her eyes at her. “If you have something to say, then say it,” said Julie. “Why are you looking at me like that?” Amaya excitedly held onto her hand. “Elaborate. What kind of love story was it?” A vein throbbed at Julie’s temple, and she looked at Amaya with disdain. “You’re such a gossip!” “Come on, tell me!” urged Amaya. “How exactly did you and Mr. Fuller meet?” “My family and Lucian’s maternal grandmother were neighbors,” Julie explained honestly. “Back when I was in junior high, he stayed at his grandmother’s house for some time, and that’s how we got to know each other.” “So, you like him,” Amaya stated without a single trace of uncertainty on her face. Julie was caught off guard for a moment before she replied quietly, sounding slightly guilty, “N–No way.” Chapter 74 “You always stutter when you’re lying, Julie,” Amaya said sagely. “That’s a sign of a guilty conscience.” Julie had no idea what to say to that.
