Listen to this chapter:

When Irene saw Gary walk in, she exclaimed, โ€œWhat are you doing here?โ€ She didnโ€™t want to look bad in front of Lioraโ€™s son, so sheโ€ฆ

โ€œI heard someone crying and yelling, so I came in to see who it was,โ€ Gary said with his arms crossed, sounding sarcastic. He leaned closer to Irene. โ€œWhatโ€™s wrong with your face? Did you get stung by a bee?โ€

Irene covered her face and shot Gary a glare before turning around and finally leaving the police station.

Gary and Benny exchanged brief greetings and left soon after. They werenโ€™t close.

Benny showed the police officer his business card and said, โ€œHi, Iโ€™m a lawyer. Could you tell me the details of this case?โ€

Meanwhile, Gary, who had already left, called Jonathan. โ€œYour mother has already left the police station. Iโ€™m heading to Forliste Rose Estates to check on Mike. Alright, call me if you need anything.โ€

Jonathan rubbed his forehead after hanging up. Teresa called earlier and told him she was heading back to Rosary Estates and asked him to take good care of Mike these next few days.

He felt ashamed to say anything. Just a few days ago, he promised Teresa that Irene had gone overseas and wouldnโ€™t come back before the baby was born.

Now Irene suddenly came back and stirred up trouble again. Jonathan just didnโ€™t know how he should explain this to Teresa.

Irene was about to go home when Jonathan got back. Seeing his stern face, she seemed to anticipate his words and struck first, bursting into tears again.

She said, โ€œI got hurt like this, and when you came into the police station, you only cared about Teresa. I busted my ass raising you, and this is what I get, huh?โ€

Jonathan was too tired to argue. Every time they quarreled, Irene would bring up how much she had done for him. He thought, โ€œDoes being her son mean I have to agree with everything she says?โ€

He said, โ€œHave you been feeling okay lately? Maybe I should take you to the hospital.โ€ He worried that she might have some mental issues.

Irene got annoyed. โ€œWhat do you mean by that? Are you saying Iโ€™m insane?โ€

Jonathan was speechless. Irene was still crying, but not shedding any tears.

Jonathanโ€™s patience was running out. โ€œAre you going to keep crying? Fine, Iโ€™ll call Grandma. I honestly donโ€™t know what to do with you.โ€

โ€œDonโ€™t,โ€ Irene shouted. โ€œIsnโ€™t my situation embarrassing enough?โ€

โ€œYou finally realize youโ€™re embarrassing yourself, huh?โ€ Jonathan frowned and continued, โ€œDidnโ€™t I tell you not to come back? You have everything abroad. Why come back here just to cause trouble for me?โ€

โ€œYou didnโ€™t tell me you were back together with Teresa, is that not a big enough deal for me to come back?โ€ Irene shot back.

Jonathan frowned, biting back his anger. Honestly, he wouldnโ€™t be so mad if he and Teresa had really gotten back together. However, he couldnโ€™t tell Irene that it was just for show.

Just then, his phone rang. It was a call from Benny.

Benny had figured out the whole story, pretty much like Donald said. Jennifer was probably following Irene after she got back, and after hearing Irene say some nasty stuff about Teresa, she hit her.

The police didnโ€™t give any details about what Irene said about Teresa. They said that Jennifer just slapped Irene in the face.

โ€œGot it,โ€ Jonathan said, hanging up.

Irene kept whining, โ€œLook at my arms and legs. It was all Jenniferโ€™s fault."

โ€œEnough with the act. You know exactly what happened to your arms and legs," Jonathan said, sitting down and taking a cup of water.

Irene paused for a couple of seconds before speaking. โ€œWhat about my face? Jennifer must go to jail, and both of them need to apologize to me.โ€

โ€œAre you done?โ€ Jonathan set down the glass and growled. โ€œYou keep picking fights with them. What exactly do you want?โ€

โ€œI dropped everything at work to come here. Do you even know how much money I lost? Do you want me to quit my job and just sit around listening to you complain all day?โ€

Irene finally stopped crying. She muttered, โ€œI wasnโ€™t the one who called you. If you want to blame someone, blame Jennifer.โ€

Jonathan snorted. โ€œIf you hadnโ€™t talked trash about Teresa, Jennifer wouldnโ€™t have hit you. By the way, did you ask Teresa to go to the police station?โ€

โ€œI didnโ€™t.โ€ Irene shook her head immediately. โ€œDonald called Teresa, not me. I didnโ€™t say anything to her."

โ€œI just complained to Heidi about what happened last time and that it was a misunderstanding. However, Jennifer acted crazily and slapped me multiple times.โ€

Seeing Jonathan frown, Irene hurried to add, โ€œIโ€™m telling the truth. If you donโ€™t believe me, ask Heidi. She was there.โ€

โ€œEnough.โ€ Jonathan waved his hand irritably. โ€œI donโ€™t have time to deal with your mess. Iโ€™ve got a company to run.โ€

Irene gritted her teeth and gently stroked her swollen cheek. โ€œJonathan, I really feel bad about this.โ€

Jonathan took a deep breath. โ€œI know.โ€

If Teresa were the one who slapped Irene, Jonathan wouldnโ€™t say a word or get mad. He knew she was just defending herself.

However, these slaps came from Jennifer. Jonathan already had a poor impression of her, but Irene had also hired someone to attack her. In this case, Irene was clearly at fault.

Irene kept complaining, โ€œIโ€™m gonna kill that bitch.โ€

Jonathan said, getting up from the couch, โ€œEnough. You brought this on yourself. Since she was defending Teresa and you had people go after her before, letโ€™s just call it even. Just let it go.โ€

โ€œAre you just going to let this slide?โ€ Irene pressed, refusing to give up. โ€œShe almost ruined my face.โ€

Jonathan said, โ€œRest assured. Iโ€™ll get you the best dermatologist and the finest medicated creams. Your face is gonna be okay.โ€

Jonathan picked up his coat and rubbed his forehead, feeling tired. โ€œIโ€™ll have Bobby arrange the best hospital for you. Rest at home for a few days. The swelling will go down soon.โ€

โ€œWait, Jonathan-โ€ Irene called out, but Jonathan was already gone. After dealing with his unreasonable mother for so long, his patience finally ran out.

Irene hadnโ€™t always been like this. Perhaps years of living alone had taken a toll on her mind.
