Chapter 910

Listen to this chapter:

Jennifer was younger and taller than Irene, so she easily pulled her away. โ€œIsnโ€™t the reason youโ€™ve been single all these years because youโ€™re so [vicious] you basically killed your own husband?โ€ Jennifer sneered.

That line completely struck Ireneโ€™s sore spot. Yorick was her bottom line, and now Jennifer was accusing her of causing his death. Irene lost it and started lashing out at Jennifer, but Jennifer just shoved her right out the door.

Irene pounded on the door, yelling, โ€œYou just wait. I wonโ€™t let you get away with it this time.โ€

Jennifer sneered, โ€œGo ahead, old hag. If youโ€™ve got any tricks, bring them on.โ€

โ€œYouโ€™d better get ready for jail,โ€ Ireneโ€™s voice echoed before fading away.

Meanwhile, Teresa was stuck at Forlisle Rose Estates, worried sick about Jonathan. She couldnโ€™t get out, and no one could get in. Suddenly, her phone rang. It was an unknown number, but she answered it anyway.

โ€œItโ€™s me.โ€ Teresa instantly recognized Ireneโ€™s voice.

Before she could even ask, Irene struck first. โ€œTeresa, if anything happens to my son, I wonโ€™t let you off. Jennifer is an example. This time, I wonโ€™t rest until she goes to jail.โ€

With a loud click, the call ended. Teresa had a bad feeling. โ€˜What now? What happened between Jennifer and Irene this time?โ€™ Teresa couldnโ€™t help but wonder.

After contacting the police station, Teresa found out that Jennifer had been taken to the police station again just an hour ago. This time, things were way worse than last time.

Irene had gotten her hands on evidence and reported Jennifer for tampering with DNA tests multiple times while she was working at the hospital. Jennifer was now in criminal detention.

Even though Jennifer had already resigned, all the records of her tampering with DNA tests at the hospital were still there. This was a blemish on Jenniferโ€™s life that she could never wash away.

The police said that last time, when Jennifer hit Irene, they could still try to work things out with compensation. But this time, Jennifer was facing criminal charges, and there was no easy way out like before.

Teresa realized that Irene was out for blood this time. She was going to settle all their old scores once and for all. Just then, her phone rang again. It was Benny.

โ€œI reviewed the case involving Jonathan. Heโ€™ll most likely be fine, but heโ€™ll have to undergo two days of investigation. Heโ€™s purely being targeted. The other side probably bribed someone from his company to act as an inside informant, working both from within and outside.โ€

โ€œYou mean thereโ€™s a mole in Horizon Lead Group?โ€ Teresa asked.

โ€œFor sure. And I bet this mole is hiding somewhere high up in the ranks. Donโ€™t worry, once Jonathan gets out, heโ€™ll definitely clean house,โ€ Benny reassured her.

Bennyโ€™s words eased Teresaโ€™s worries a little. At least Jonathan was okay, and Teresa hoped heโ€™d be out soon to find out who set him up. But she still couldnโ€™t shake off her anxiety. Her heart was hanging in midair.

She brought up Jenniferโ€™s situation to Benny. โ€œBenny, since Jennifer isnโ€™t a doctor anymore, can Irene still go after her for forging those reports back then?โ€

Benny said, โ€œThatโ€™s possible. If she broke the law while employed, she could be sued by the victim within three years, even after leaving the job. Jenniferโ€™s situation looks dicey. With Jonathan away and his mom causing trouble, this lawsuit is inevitable.โ€

Teresaโ€™s heart skipped a beat. โ€œWhatโ€™s the sentence looking like for her?โ€ she asked.

โ€œUp to three years in prison or detention,โ€ Benny replied.

Teresa clenched her fists. She asked, โ€œIs there any other way, Benny?โ€ Benny looked troubled.

This was a criminal offense that had been covered up by Jonathan, but now Irene had completely exposed it. If lightly sentenced, she could have as little as six months; if heavily sentenced, up to three years. There was no escaping this.

Teresa sucked in a sharp breath. Jennifer doesnโ€™t even have a job right now. If she ends up with a criminal record, it would definitely ruin her future, she thought.

โ€œIs there really no other way?โ€ Teresa asked.

Benny nodded. โ€œJennifer abused her authority and broke the law. This is perjury, plain and simple.โ€

Every crime came with a price. Teresa knew that. She gripped the edge of the table, forcing herself to stay calm. โ€œIs there any way to make the damage as small as possible?โ€

Benny said, โ€œIf we prove Jennifer forged the document not for money or to frame someone, she can get a lighter sentence. We need Jonathanโ€™s statement and forgiveness, and Jennifer must explain the situation clearly for a reduced penalty.โ€

That was already the best possible outcome Benny could offer. After all, when Jennifer abused her position to forge those DNA tests, the direct victim was Jonathan. Jonathan himself had to come forward for this.

โ€œTeresa? Teresa?โ€ Benny called out.

โ€œIโ€™m listening,โ€ Teresa replied, though her mind was spinning. โ€˜What can I even do right now?โ€™ she wondered.

Benny hurriedly said, โ€œListen, what you need to do now is stay calm. Jonathan made me promise to keep you steady. Donโ€™t think about shouldering Jenniferโ€™s or Jonathanโ€™s burdens.

โ€œAs a soonโ€“toโ€“be mom, your priority is taking care of yourself. Others, your friends and family, along with Jonathanโ€™s brothers, will handle the rest.โ€

Teresa listened quietly, taking a deep breath before nodding. โ€œI get it.โ€

Benny tried to lighten the mood. โ€œSeriously, if you get stressed and something happens to the baby, thatโ€™s the real problem. You get what I mean? Youโ€™re carrying a life in there.โ€

Teresa nodded and hung up the phone, not wanting to talk any longer. Right after, Donald called her. Donald already knew Jennifer had been detained again, and this time it was really serious.

โ€œTeresa, sorry to bother you while youโ€™re supposed to be resting, but Jenniferโ€™s situation is urgent. The police contacted me and said she might actually get sentenced. Could you come with me to see Irene and try to plead with her?โ€ Donald said anxiously.

โ€œBut pleading with Irene wonโ€™t help. What we really need is for Jonathan to write a statement of forgiveness. The problem is, Jonathan was taken in by the prosecutors today and still hasnโ€™t come back,โ€ Teresa replied.

โ€œSo what should we do, Teresa? Maybe Iโ€™ll head to the police station first and keep you posted?โ€ Donald suggested.

โ€œAlright, you go on ahead,โ€ Teresa said.

She told Donald to head to the police station first. If Jonathan were here right now, Teresa would definitely go with him. But he wasnโ€™t here. Teresa hesitated for a long time. She knew Irene actually wanted to see her.

She still wanted to go, but then Benny called again, and with just a few words, he completely shut down that thought.

โ€œCome on, Teresa, just stay home, alright? Jonathan trusts me with this, so donโ€™t make things tough for me, okay?โ€ Benny said.

Benny had already headed to the police station. He promised to keep Teresa updated as soon as he had any news. โ€œAlright, I got it,โ€ Teresa said, hanging up the phone again.

โ€œMs. Johnston.โ€ The nanny hurried over. โ€œThereโ€™s a man outside.โ€

Teresa was stunned. โ€˜Who could possibly show up right now? No one else should be able to get in,โ€™ Teresa thought, feeling even more uneasy.
