Chapter 919
โDad, where are you going?โ Michael asked. He gripped Jonathanโs hand tightly, afraid he would leave again and never come back.
Jonathan picked up Michael and carried him to the backyard to comfort him. โBe good. I need to take care of something. I will be back soon.โ
Once Michael was comforted, Jonathan told Teresa he would be back soon. He also said, โI had no idea my mom was stirring up trouble again.โ
โI know,โ Teresa replied. She trusted him this time.
Jonathan thought for a moment and added, โI promise Iโll do everything I can to make sure both families keep their dignity.โ
After all, Evelyn liked Jennifer very much.
Teresa thought for a while and said, โBenny told me about some similar cases. Thatโs the best Jennifer could get, a lighter sentence. Even if the families end up at odds, itโs fine. Weโll just come clean about the fake remarriage.โ
Jonathan suddenly frowned. โIf this needs to be exposed, Iโll be the one to say it. You just leave it with me, stay home, and get some rest.โ
Teresa nodded.
Meanwhile, at the police station, Irene had left, leaving only Gary and Donald still there.
Donald stared out the window, lost in thought. A shadow of stubble darkened his chin. He had no idea how Jennifer was these days. He wondered if she was stuck in a tiny, stuffy cell, and if she felt scared.
They were still in the cooling-off period, so they hadnโt gotten the divorce certificate and werenโt really divorced yet. That meant, at least on paper, he was still Jenniferโs husband.
Gary bought a cup of coffee to keep himself awake. When he was scrolling through his phone, he suddenly heard a familiar voice. โWhat are you two doing here?โ
Gary put down his cup and looked up happily. He called, โJonathan.โ
When he was about to walk over to Jonathan, Donald rushed past him and asked, โJonathan, youโre out of the Department of Justiceโs office. Is everything okay?โ
โYes. I heard my mom sued Jennifer,โ Jonathan said.
โYeah. Itโs all because of that DNA test Jennifer did before. Aunt Irene brought up the old stuff,โ Donald replied.
Donald didnโt hesitate. He said, โJonathan, you need to sign a letter of forgiveness and claim you wonโt hold Jennifer responsible. This way she can get out of there.โ
Jonathan thought for a moment and said, โI can forgive her, but it isnโt up to me whether she can get released or not.โ
โWhat do you mean? Why is that?โ Donald blurted out.
Just then, Jonathanโs phone rang. He stepped aside to take the call, leaving the questions hanging in the air.
Donald was getting anxious. He wondered, โHow can Jonathan so calmly take a call right now? Iโm seriously worried about Jennifer. If she ends up in jail, what will happen to her for the rest of her life?โ
Gary grabbed Donaldโs arm and said, โJonathan is right. His forgiveness doesnโt mean Jennifer will be released.โ
โWhy not? Jennifer admitted her fault and even quit her job. Jonathan said he wouldnโt go after her as long as she stopped being a doctor. How could she still end up in jail?โ Donald protested.
โDonโt you get it? Itโs not Jonathan who made her go to jail,โ Gary replied.
When Gary had been scrolling through his phone, he hadnโt been playing games or watching videos. He had been searching for cases similar to Jenniferโs instead.
โJennifer is facing criminal charges. Thatโs not what Jonathanโs forgiveness could change. This isnโt like running a red light or getting into a fender bender, where you just pay a fine and move on. Law-breaking and crime commitment arenโt the same thing,โ Gary explained.
Donaldโs eyes flashed, and his lips were pressed into a hard line. He really hadnโt thought it through.
