Chapter 919

โ€œDad, where are you going?โ€ Michael asked. He gripped Jonathanโ€™s hand tightly, afraid he would leave again and never come back.

Jonathan picked up Michael and carried him to the backyard to comfort him. โ€œBe good. I need to take care of something. I will be back soon.โ€

Once Michael was comforted, Jonathan told Teresa he would be back soon. He also said, โ€œI had no idea my mom was stirring up trouble again.โ€

โ€œI know,โ€ Teresa replied. She trusted him this time.

Jonathan thought for a moment and added, โ€œI promise Iโ€™ll do everything I can to make sure both families keep their dignity.โ€

After all, Evelyn liked Jennifer very much.

Teresa thought for a while and said, โ€œBenny told me about some similar cases. Thatโ€™s the best Jennifer could get, a lighter sentence. Even if the families end up at odds, itโ€™s fine. Weโ€™ll just come clean about the fake remarriage.โ€

Jonathan suddenly frowned. โ€œIf this needs to be exposed, Iโ€™ll be the one to say it. You just leave it with me, stay home, and get some rest.โ€

Teresa nodded.

Meanwhile, at the police station, Irene had left, leaving only Gary and Donald still there.

Donald stared out the window, lost in thought. A shadow of stubble darkened his chin. He had no idea how Jennifer was these days. He wondered if she was stuck in a tiny, stuffy cell, and if she felt scared.

They were still in the cooling-off period, so they hadnโ€™t gotten the divorce certificate and werenโ€™t really divorced yet. That meant, at least on paper, he was still Jenniferโ€™s husband.

Gary bought a cup of coffee to keep himself awake. When he was scrolling through his phone, he suddenly heard a familiar voice. โ€œWhat are you two doing here?โ€

Gary put down his cup and looked up happily. He called, โ€œJonathan.โ€

When he was about to walk over to Jonathan, Donald rushed past him and asked, โ€œJonathan, youโ€™re out of the Department of Justiceโ€™s office. Is everything okay?โ€

โ€œYes. I heard my mom sued Jennifer,โ€ Jonathan said.

โ€œYeah. Itโ€™s all because of that DNA test Jennifer did before. Aunt Irene brought up the old stuff,โ€ Donald replied.

Donald didnโ€™t hesitate. He said, โ€œJonathan, you need to sign a letter of forgiveness and claim you wonโ€™t hold Jennifer responsible. This way she can get out of there.โ€

Jonathan thought for a moment and said, โ€œI can forgive her, but it isnโ€™t up to me whether she can get released or not.โ€

โ€œWhat do you mean? Why is that?โ€ Donald blurted out.

Just then, Jonathanโ€™s phone rang. He stepped aside to take the call, leaving the questions hanging in the air.

Donald was getting anxious. He wondered, โ€œHow can Jonathan so calmly take a call right now? Iโ€™m seriously worried about Jennifer. If she ends up in jail, what will happen to her for the rest of her life?โ€

Gary grabbed Donaldโ€™s arm and said, โ€œJonathan is right. His forgiveness doesnโ€™t mean Jennifer will be released.โ€

โ€œWhy not? Jennifer admitted her fault and even quit her job. Jonathan said he wouldnโ€™t go after her as long as she stopped being a doctor. How could she still end up in jail?โ€ Donald protested.

โ€œDonโ€™t you get it? Itโ€™s not Jonathan who made her go to jail,โ€ Gary replied.

When Gary had been scrolling through his phone, he hadnโ€™t been playing games or watching videos. He had been searching for cases similar to Jenniferโ€™s instead.

โ€œJennifer is facing criminal charges. Thatโ€™s not what Jonathanโ€™s forgiveness could change. This isnโ€™t like running a red light or getting into a fender bender, where you just pay a fine and move on. Law-breaking and crime commitment arenโ€™t the same thing,โ€ Gary explained.

Donaldโ€™s eyes flashed, and his lips were pressed into a hard line. He really hadnโ€™t thought it through.
