Chapter 106
Dave, who had been neglecting his duties, suddenly asked, "Hey, she looks unwell. Should we take her to the hospital?"
Miranda then realized several others were around her. They all seemed relieved.
Winter snapped back to her senses. "I've called emergency. Are you feeling any discomfort?"
"I might have injured my arm," Miranda said, trying to move it. She could still move it in the water, but not as easily now.
"What happened exactly? Why were you sinking?"
Miranda paused. "Something's wrong with my oxygen tank."
Winter immediately picked up Miranda's oxygen tank. Nothing seemed amiss; however, there was a tiny hole at the bottom!
Winter glared sharply at Dave.
"Impossible! We change our gear every year and conduct a thorough checkup before use. Nothing like this has ever happened!" Dave protested solemnly. "Besides, even if there was danger, we could have been swiftly rescued in the safe zone. No one would have drowned."
Winter's anger flared. "So you mean to say my friend is lying? If I hadn't steered the speedboat over in time, do you know what would have happened?"
Miranda glanced at Dave, who was still trying to explain. He seemed genuinely anxious and panicked. It was obvious he didn't know what to say.
Amid the bickering, Miranda suddenly said, "I met a shark."
Winter was alarmed.
Dave was disbelieving. "That's impossible! Blacklip reef sharks are found outside the safe zones, but they rarely appear in the deep sea below 200 feet. Compared to other sharks, they are more timid and avoid humans. They rarely attack."
Miranda said gently, "The camera on my wetsuit should have recorded everything. If you don't believe me, you can check the recording."
Dave was speechless.
"Oh my god, what happened?" Tim Reed, the lifeguard, who had been nowhere to be seen, finally arrived. He seemed shocked and clueless.
Dave glowered. "Tim, where have you been? Why didn't you go to her rescue immediately?"
Tim raised his hands in a surrendering gesture. Smiling sheepishly, he took a few steps back. "Dude, I was using the restroom. So, what happened? Why are you so serious?"
Winter was furious. "You have the nerve to say that? Aren't you the lifeguard? My friend had an accident and signaled for help, but you weren't there. I believe you were deliberately stalling!"
They were in the deep sea. The importance of lifeguards was paramount. If he hadn't been vigilant, Miranda might have died if Winter hadn't noticed her distress.
Tim refused to accept the accusation. He tried to excuse himself cunningly. "I just happened to have a bad stomach. There are no rules saying I can't use the restroom while working, are there? Besides, unexpected incidents happen in the water. Your friend's fine now, right?" He shrugged, acting as if it were insignificant. His reaction was infuriating.
