Chapter 388
Windsor gripped his phone, his fingertips trembling. His phone vibrated. He quickly unlocked the screen, and a text message appeared: "[Your face is ashen. You must have broken your vow after being seduced.]" The short sentence sent chills down his spine.
Windsor stood rooted to the spot, then turned on the study lamp. He stared at his aged reflection in the large mirror. He had always taken such good care of himself, but now he looked as if he’d aged overnight.
“How is this possible? I wasn’t like this when I came back yesterday,” Windsor muttered, dumbfounded. Images from the previous night and day flashed through his mind. Besides his encounter with Odalys, he had only seen Sophia.
“Was it Odalys or Sophia? Who made me break my vow?” Windsor pressed his hand against the mirror, staring intently at his reflection. His carefully maintained skin looked sallow, and the wrinkles on his face were more pronounced. He squeezed his cheeks hard, leaving two red marks. The anger in his eyes intensified.
Windsor grunted. A mouthful of blood spurted from his mouth, splashing onto the mirror. The bright red blood was shocking, and the pain in his chest intensified, like a knife constantly twisting. He clutched his chest, stumbled back, and fell to the ground.
Gritting his teeth, Windsor said, “No, I will never give up! I’ve been hiding abroad for three years to cultivate my mind and body, and I returned to take control of Crownridge. I will not be tricked.”
“The Bennett family is mine, and so is Crownridge! I won’t allow anyone to ruin my plan!”
However, the chest wound pained him so severely that, when he tried to get up, his vision darkened, and he fainted.
Outside the door, Hannah, supported by Atlas and Caspian, stood listening to the commotion inside. Her face was grim.
“Mom, why did you say there’s something wrong with Dad?” Atlas asked, dazed. He found Windsor’s behavior strange, and felt the entire Bennett family was acting unusually. Every time he returned to the Bennett Villa, he felt an eerie atmosphere, even experiencing jolting nightmares. Despite knowing the house intimately, a sense of fear permeated the place. “Mom, what on earth is going on?” Caspian asked suddenly.
Ever since Odalys replaced Sophia and the Bennett Group was suppressed, a string of unfortunate events had befallen them. First, Hannah’s leg was broken by a falling chandelier. Then, Atlas became the target of malicious revenge. Henry was seriously injured after being maliciously slandered. Everything seemed chaotic.
Caspian, regaining his composure, asked, “Why did Henry get involved with Edie? Why did Dad suddenly go abroad three years ago? And why did you suddenly bring Odalys home? Was it simply to replace Sophia? Or was there something else you were planning?”
Atlas fell silent, staring at Caspian, his pupils constricted. These questions left him speechless. He wondered if there was a family secret.
Caspian pressed, “You were suddenly injured and hospitalized, then it was me and Henry! Later, Atlas was smeared on the show, and Sophia got together with Dad. What’s the matter with the Love Spell? Why do you all know about these things? When you brought Odalys back to the Bennett family, did you plan to use her as a scapegoat? Was the Love Spell originally intended for her?”
Atlas stood there, astonished. His grip on Hannah’s hand loosened. Each of Caspian’s questions felt like a hammer blow to his heart. He had never considered these things, never imagined his family was so complicated. Sophia’s relationship with Windsor had already shattered his faith. Now, Caspian’s accusations that his parents had plotted against Odalys were unacceptable. Even if he disliked Odalys, he didn't want her dead. If Caspian was right, his past actions towards Odalys were monstrous.
Hannah snapped, “Shut up! Your father and I are divorced, and the Bennett Group is beyond saving. You should all be thinking about what to do next. Without the Bennett Group, without those resources, do you really think you can still live like before? Without the Bennett family, you are nothing.”
Clenching her teeth, she supported herself on the handrail and walked laboriously toward her room. Atlas hurried to help her.
Caspian stood, his eyes cold, staring in Hannah’s direction before turning to Windsor’s study. His hands clenched into fists. After a long while, he went downstairs.
“No, I can’t just sit here and wait for death. I have to fight back. Even if I can’t save the Bennett family, I can at least protect myself,” Caspian muttered.
The Bennett Villa was plunged into eerie silence.
Outside, Henry sat in his car, rolled down the window, lit a cigar, and took a drag.
Henry whispered, “It’s me! Help me get Edie out. She didn’t hurt anyone in the arson attack. Get her a certificate of schizophrenia! Say she went insane after being abandoned by the Stewart family and wanted revenge.”
He puffed on his cigar, his knuckles white. His eyes were vicious. Edie had ruined his reputation, and he needed the Stewart family to recover. The Bennett family was unreliable; he needed the Simpsons.
“The Simpson family is just my pawn,” Henry said coldly. He looked at the documents detailing Edie’s use of the Stewart family’s power and resources to bolster the Simpson Group. The Simpsons were now as powerful as the Tillery family and might soon surpass the Lark family. His anxiety vanished. With a harsh twist, he tossed his cigar out the window, sped away, never looking back at the Bennett Villa.
Chapter 388
Unbeknownst to him, as his car sped away, a surge of negative energy from the Bennett Villa pursued him, enveloping his vehicle.
Henry groaned. An eerie aura enveloped him, making him uncomfortable. He turned up the heat but felt an invisible hand brush against his. Startled, he jerked the steering wheel, and the Mercedes slammed into a large tree. The car crashed violently; Henry lurched forward, nearly thrown from the vehicle. Dizziness overwhelmed him, and he lost consciousness.
As he blacked out, a figure emerged from the shadows, approaching the wrecked car. The person opened the door, dragged Henry out, and sneered. Blood trickled from a wound on Henry’s forehead.
“This is the new husband you’ve chosen?” the man sneered, glancing disdainfully at Henry.
Edie stood beside him, a creepy smile spreading across her haggard face.
