Chapter 115
It was a typical Monday, and Kirin Fondue was bustling with the usual crowd. Calliope was helping out by serving dishes, and as she approached the table by the window, she noticed Lisette sitting there. Her brow furrowed slightly, but she didnโt let it show as she set down the dish sheโd been carrying. Ignoring Lisette, she was about to turn and continue with her work when Lisette called out, โArenโt you going to sit with me for a moment? Iโve got some things to discuss with you.โ
Calliope paused briefly, then turned and sat across from Lisette, leaning back in her chair with her hands in her pockets, exuding a casual defiance. โWhat is it?โ she asked. โWhat do you want to talk about?โ
Lisette gave Calliope a once-over, smugness flickering in her eyes. โYou seem to be enjoying your time as a waitress, Calliope. Even after becoming Mrs. Myers, youโre still here. Didnโt Silas give you any spending money?โ
Calliope shrugged. โIโm not like you, Lisette. I donโt need to rely on a man for money.โ
Lisette shook her head. โThatโs where youโre wrong. I believe a woman should be as successful as possible to marry rich. I make my own money, and Iโm marrying into wealth.โ
Calliope glanced at her. โSo, are you here to share your ambitious plans with me?โ
โOf course not,โ Lisette replied. โIโm here to tell you that Valerian knows you saved him back then. But he said heโd still stand by me. So donโt think you can stir up trouble. Even if it goes public, heโll be on my side over yours.โ
โValerian cares more for me than he ever will for you,โ Lisette added triumphantly, watching for any distress on Calliopeโs face. But as the seconds ticked by, Calliope remained unfazed, neither disappointed nor hysterical. โAre you done?โ Calliope asked evenly.
โYouโre not upset?โ Lisette narrowed her eyes, frustration bubbling inside her.
โWhy should I be upset? I donโt expect anything from Valerian. Heโs your brother, not mine.โ
Calliope shrugged again. โOh, and thanks for helping me see who cares about me.โ
Lisette fumed silently while her eyes bore into Calliope. If Valerian couldnโt provoke her, perhaps Gideon would. โCalliope, thereโs something you probably donโt know,โ Lisette said with a sly grin. โGideon is getting married. To Yvette.โ
Calliope remained as calm as ever, her gaze steady on Lisette. โSo?โ
Lisette had hoped for an outburst, but Calliope just sat there, composed and unbothered. The excitement on Lisetteโs face faltered. How could Calliope be so calm? Why wasnโt she angry?
โGideonโs marrying Yvette, and youโre not upset? Not even a little sad? Come on, Calliope, stop pretending. Everyone knows you loved Gideon and wanted to marry him. You only ended up with Silas because Gideon wasnโt around, right? Arenโt you even a bit rattled?โ
Calliope smirked. โWhy should I be sad? Gideonโs no longer my problem. Iโm free to be with my husband without any drama. Isnโt that a good thing? Whatโs the matter, Lisette? Are you disappointed Iโm not upset? Were you hoping Iโd be angry?โ
