Chapter 256

โ€œSeriously, I didnโ€™t? Think back to what I said at the amusement park,โ€ Calliope said with a hint of indifference.

โ€œCalliope, stop pretending. You never said a word. If you had, do you think I wouldnโ€™t have checked it out? Do you think I wouldnโ€™t know where she is?โ€ Valerianโ€™s face was stormy. โ€œIf the Miracle Doctor hadnโ€™t been off the grid all these years, we wouldnโ€™t be turning to you for help!โ€

Zelda glanced at Calliope, trying to soften her tone. โ€œCallie, as your mother, Iโ€™m begging you. Please help your brother.โ€

Calliope met Zeldaโ€™s eyes. โ€œI already told you, twenty percent of the company shares.โ€

โ€œDo you really want me to get on my knees and beg?โ€ Zelda fumed, humiliated.

โ€œWhy can you give shares to Lisette but not me?โ€ Calliope asked. โ€œIโ€™m not asking you to beg. My terms arenโ€™t unreasonable, are they?โ€

โ€œYou donโ€™t know the first thing about running a business. What use are shares to you?โ€ Valerian snapped, irritation lacing his voice. โ€œShares should be in the hands of someone who knows what theyโ€™re doing. Youโ€™d just get conned out of them.โ€

โ€œCalliope, Iโ€™m asking you again. Will you help us?โ€ Zelda took a deep breath, her demeanor turning more assertive.

โ€œIโ€™ve already stated my terms.โ€

โ€œCallie, Iโ€™m begging you to save your brother,โ€ Zelda implored, desperation creeping into her voice. โ€œHe was so good to you when you were little. He adored you! Do you want me to kneel before you as your mother?โ€

โ€œCallie, family means something. Itโ€™s your brother and your sister. Are you going to turn your back on them?โ€

Suddenly, Zelda sank to her knees right before Calliope, tears streaming down her face.

They were in front of the hospital, with relatives of patients bustling around. When Zelda knelt, it drew a crowd. โ€œWhatโ€™s going on here?โ€

โ€œWhy is this woman kneeling?โ€

โ€œWhatโ€™s she begging for? The girl looks kinda heartless, doesnโ€™t she?โ€

Calliope thought, are you kidding me? She never expected Zelda to pull the โ€˜moral guiltโ€™ card on her like this. And Valerian was joining in, too?

โ€œCallie, thatโ€™s your mother. Sheโ€™s on her knees asking you. Are you really going to ignore your brother? You have a way to help them. Why wonโ€™t you?โ€

โ€œEveryone, come look! A mother is kneeling, begging her daughter just for a doctorโ€™s name, and the daughter wonโ€™t even do that much! This daughter is going to drive her own mother to despair!โ€

Calliope sighed inwardly. This was too much.

She looked at Zelda kneeling before her, kept her expression calm, and chose not to engage.

โ€œCalliope, your momโ€™s kneeling, and you wonโ€™t even help her up? Have you no conscience?โ€ Valerian was losing it as she remained unresponsive.

The crowd began to murmur and point fingers at Calliope.

โ€œI told you what I wanted. If you donโ€™t believe me, what can I do?โ€ Calliope said with a cold detachment. โ€œNot all mothers deserve the title.โ€

โ€œBesides,โ€ Calliope continued, โ€œI said my terms. You can give the shares to your adopted daughter. If you want to use the โ€˜real daughterโ€™ card against me, at least match what you gave her.โ€
