Chapter 259
โAre you Silasโs wife?โ Yara asked with a curious glint in her eyes as she sized Calliope up. โYou do look good, but being good-looking doesnโt automatically mean youโre right for him.โ
Standing to the side, Yara pulled out a pack of cigarettes, took one for herself, and lit it. Then she offered one to Uriah.
He took it, and Yara extended the pack to Calliope.
โDonโt bother. Callie doesnโtโฆโ Uriah said, but Calliope had already taken a cigarette before he could finish his sentence.
Uriah blinked in surprise and asked quietly, โYou smoke?โ
Calliope glanced at the cigarette in her hand. โSmokingโs bad for your health,โ she remarked, but leaned forward to light it when Yara offered her a light. She took a drag, her movements smooth and practiced, unlike someone unfamiliar with smoking.
Uriah was shocked. Calliope had always looked gentle and innocent, not the type youโd picture with a cigarette. Heโd assumed she was the kind of person whoโd wrinkle her nose at the smell of smoke.
Yet, there she was, smoking with an ease that suggested experience. It was as if she had transformed from a sweet little rabbit into a cunning, beautiful fox. No wonder Silas was in love with her. There was more to Calliope than met the eye.
Calliope knew how to smoke. Sheโd mingled with all sorts of people and frequented places where smoking was the least of the vices. It was a useful skillโto blend in, to gather information, to make connections. A cigarette could be a bridge.
Unlike Yara, who openly wore her strength and reputation, Calliope hid hers beneath a veneer of innocence. Yara watched Calliope with interest, tilting her head slightly. Despite Calliopeโs unassuming demeanor, she was the woman Silas chose to protect. It didnโt seem like Silasโs usual way. He wasnโt one to be swayed by mere beauty.
She had read about Calliope. The rumors painted her as someone overlooked at home, not particularly skilled or remarkable.
โSo, whereโs my husband?โ Calliope asked after exhaling a puff of smoke. โI heard heโs with you and that youโd only release him if I came. Is that true?โ
โYes,โ Yara nodded.
โThen can you let him go?โ Calliope asked.
โNope,โ Yara shrugged. โIf I just let him go that easily, I wouldnโt be me.โ
โWhat do you want, then?โ Calliope remained calm.
โYou need to prove youโre worthy of him,โ Yara said. โThen Iโll consider returning him to you.โ
Calliope was silent for a moment.
Uriah frowned. โYara, give it a rest. Why are you messing with her? You know sheโs not part of our world. Sheโs not like you, hasnโt gone through what you have. Donโt push it!โ
โWhat? I havenโt even set any demands yet. How am I pushing it?โ Yara smirked.
