Chapter 409

The room fell silent, eyes darting between Silas and Calliope. A few curious souls also glanced at Uriah, who stood on the steps looking impossibly dashing.

โ€œWhatโ€™s Calliope up to now?โ€ someone muttered, watching as she picked up a bottle of whiskey, suspicion clouding their gaze.

The group seated at the table in front of Calliope exchanged bewildered looks as she reached for the bottle.

โ€œThis oneโ€™s empty, right?โ€ Calliope asked, holding up the bottle. โ€œMind if I borrow it?โ€

The people at the table nodded, still trying to process what was happening.

With determination in her stride, Calliope headed towards Gideon.

โ€œGideon!โ€ she called out, and before anyone could react, she smashed the bottle over Gideonโ€™s head. His grip on Silas loosened as shards of glass scattered everywhere, and blood trickled down his face.

Gideon, stunned by the pain, didnโ€™t even clutch his wound. He stared at Calliope, incredulous.

โ€œSobered up yet? If not, I can give you another go,โ€ Calliope said coldly, tossing the broken bottle aside.

The crowd quickly stepped back, shock and awe mingling in their expressions. Some even looked at Calliope with newfound respect.

Uriah started clapping. โ€œThatโ€™s Silasโ€™s wife for youโ€“fearless!โ€

Silas didnโ€™t need to say a word; a slight smirk played on his lips, clearly proud of his wifeโ€™s boldness.

โ€œYou-โ€ Gideon stammered, his thoughts scrambled.

โ€œClear-headed now? Good, because I have a few things to say,โ€ Calliope continued, her tone icy.

โ€œCallie-โ€ Gideon began, but Calliope cut him off.

โ€œNot โ€˜Callie.โ€™ Try โ€˜Aunt Calliopeโ€™ instead!โ€

โ€œMaybe youโ€™re not aware of a few things, but itโ€™s time you got the memo,โ€ she asserted. โ€œAbout Silas and the Baker familyโ€“do you know why heโ€™s been overseeing the Baker Group? Itโ€™s not because heโ€™s bored or has any designs on it.โ€

โ€œItโ€™s because, apart from Eamon, the rest of you couldnโ€™t manage your way out of a paper bag. Without Silas, the Baker Group would have crumbled. Ungrateful isnโ€™t even the half of it. When the Baker Group faced bankruptcy, it was Silasโ€™s mother who saved it with a hefty sum.โ€

โ€œDo you even know how the Baker Group became what it is today? Maybe you donโ€™t, but you should ask your parents. Silas built it up!โ€

โ€œAnd now, you think you can just waltz in and claim it all? Tell me, what have you actually done for the Baker Group? Anyone with a bit of age on them here knows the truth about this.โ€

โ€œAnd let me be clear, Silas has zero interest in the Baker Group. Heโ€™s been wanting to step down, but Eamon wouldnโ€™t let him. He hoped to train you because, compared to the rest of the family, youโ€™re the least incompetent!โ€
