Ever since the matter with the Tags Family and the apnea retest, and Fayden's safe return, Keira had spent the day with them. But now, with Haydenโs sudden remark, unease crept back into her. It wasnโt fear; it was something else. Now that she had a baby on the way, she just wanted to get through each day peacefully, ensuring her child could come into this world happy and safe.
Through the rearview mirror, she saw the car tailing them. It was a large SUVโimposing and sturdy. โIf you were to collide with them head-on now, what are our chances of winning?โ she asked Hayden.
He let out a soft chuckle. โWhat do you think?โ
To make getting in and out of the car more convenient and comfortable for Keira, Hayden had chosen to drive a corporate vehicle. In terms of size, the car behind them was far larger than theirs.
โEven if we could win a collision, we wonโt do it,โ Hayden said, taking her hand in his. โDonโt worry. Once we reach the next stop, Iโll let you out to pretend to shop while I have a little chat with them.โ
โNo way. How could I just leave you behind?โ Keira protested.
Hayden didnโt respond, only gazing at her with those deep, penetrating eyes that made her heart flutter slightly.
โFine. Then stay in the car, donโt move, and Iโll lock the doors. Iโll step out and have a word with them,โ he said, catching her completely off guard.
โHave a word? That polite?โ
Hayden smiled. โWhat else? Ram into their car or grab a stick to start a fight?โ His hand gently brushed her face. โRelax. They wouldnโt dare do anything to us in broad daylight.โ
โThen why lock me in the car? Afraid theyโll take me away the moment you leave?โ Keira shot back, unconvinced.
โThey say pregnancy makes a woman scatterbrained, but my wife is different. Not only are you not scatterbrained, but youโre sharp as ever,โ Hayden said, his expression full of indulgence.
Keira glanced at the rearview mirror again. โWhat do you think? Are they people you didnโt completely take care of?โ
Haydenโs gaze darkened. โNo. If I were to wipe them out, there wouldnโt be any loose ends.โ
She trusted him. If this wasnโt revenge, then they werenโt after Haydenโthey were after her. While it couldโve been someone from the Hart family, those people usually approached her through Kylian. There was no need for them to resort to tailing her like this.
โTheyโre after me? But I havenโt offended anyone recently. Could it have something to do with Sashaโs visit?โ she asked, growing more and more frustrated.
All Keira wanted was a peaceful life. But as they said, the tree might want to stay still, but the wind never stopped.
โIโm not sure, but donโt panic yet,โ Hayden said, steering the wheel with one hand while maintaining a steady drive. โWeโll pretend we havenโt noticed and quietly observe them,โ he added.
Keira agreed with his approach. To maintain the pretense, Hayden took her on a detour. They stopped at a few places, including a supermarket to pick up some gifts. After all, it wouldnโt be polite to visit Aaron empty-handed, especially since he was injured.
They also browsed a baby store. Hayden picked out an adorable little outfit and bought it without hesitation. He even remarked on how cute baby clothes were and promised to bring her back for more shopping later.
Despite the detour, when they headed back toward Lenaโs place, the car was still following them.
โHow long are they planning to keep this up?โ Keira muttered, frustrated and uneasy.
โI donโt know. Let them follow. Iโve arranged for someone to take care of it,โ Hayden said, his patience clearly running thin.
Keira didnโt object. This was something that needed to be resolved and understood.
