Chapter 309

โ€œIโ€™ve changed a bit from four years ago, but as the saying goes, โ€˜You can take the boy out of the country, but you canโ€™t take the country out of the boy.โ€™ My essence remains the same,โ€ Sienna said, leaning back in her seat, a faint smile playing on her lips. โ€œYou used to dislike me so much; you wouldnโ€™t like me much more now.โ€

This had been evident in their recent interactions. He held some affection for her, but it wasn't enough for her to forget the past, let alone build a future. Josiahโ€™s insides churned, but his lips curled into a mocking smile. โ€œWhether I like you or not, you should know better than I do, right?โ€

โ€œHmm,โ€ Sienna raised an eyebrow. โ€œNever heard of the onlookers seeing most of the game?โ€ She stared intently at his handsome face, speaking seriously. โ€œIโ€™m just your second choice. Four years ago, I was foolish and paid a heavy price. Four years later, why would I repeat the same mistake? Just because you find me more tolerable?โ€

The manโ€™s eyes darkened. Sienna took a deep breath. โ€œIโ€™m grateful that youโ€™ve accepted Joyce and are responsible for her. Youโ€™re not entirely without redeeming qualities. But we donโ€™t need to force ourselves together for Joyceโ€™s sake. We can just love her from our own sides.โ€ She closed her eyes and leaned back, ending the conversation.

Faced with her resistance, Josiah wanted to speak but stopped, managing only a bitter twist of his lips and a heavy silence. The car stopped before her apartment building.

โ€œThanks,โ€ Sienna turned to open the car door, only to find it locked. โ€œJosiah, open the door, please.โ€

Josiah remained motionless, retrieving a piece of gum, popping it in his mouth, and even offering some to Sienna with a wave. โ€œWant some?โ€

Sienna was startled. โ€œI need to get out of the car!โ€ Seeing his continued inaction, she anxiously lunged forward, attempting to unlock the door. Josiah seized the opportunity, pulling her into a tight embrace. Sienna looked up in shock. โ€œSienna,โ€ he called out, murmuring her name affectionately. โ€œWeโ€™ve been together for so long. Donโ€™t you have any feelings for me at all? You used to like me a jot.โ€

Sienna frowned, struggling to break free, but despite his seemingly gentle hold, she couldnโ€™t budge. โ€œLike you? You already know that. If it werenโ€™t for Joyce, would I be with someone who abandoned me for four years!โ€ Struck by her words, Josiah froze, his expression blank. Sienna pushed him away and turned to leave the car.

โ€œSienna,โ€ Josiah said, then leaned in, hugging her from behind, his arm outstretched before her. He complained in a low voice, โ€œWhat am I supposed to do? I didnโ€™t like you before! I treated you badly. But I canโ€™t go back to the past. Tell me, what should I do?โ€

Josiah thought, How could I have anticipated this day back then?

Siennaโ€™s back stiffened. Staring blankly out the window, her voice was cold. โ€œThen look forward.โ€ She closed her eyes, a memory of boarding a plane to Fliraty four years ago flashing through her mind. โ€œYou are already a thing of the past to me. What we had ended four years ago.โ€

After leaving Sunshine Neighborhood, it was still early. Josiah, not wanting to return to the desolate Silver Beach, went to Mouse House instead. To his surprise, he found only Thomas, not Yosef.

โ€œWhatโ€™s keeping Yosef so busy?โ€ Josiah asked casually.

Thomas shook his head. โ€œNot sure. He mentioned some family matters.โ€

Josiah was taken aback. โ€œWhat kind of matters? Does he need help?โ€

โ€œHe didnโ€™t say. Heโ€™ll ask if he needs to.โ€ Thomas nodded. โ€œLetโ€™s play a game.โ€

โ€œSure,โ€ Josiah replied.

Yosefโ€™s family did have matters at hand, but it wasnโ€™t the Compton family; it was Xeniaโ€™s. Upon Yosefโ€™s arrival, Xenia anxiously grabbed his hand. โ€œYosef, you have to help Cedric!โ€

โ€œDonโ€™t worry, Auntie,โ€ Yosef nodded. โ€œIโ€™ll do my best.โ€ He asked, โ€œWhereโ€™s Cedric?โ€

In the upstairs study, Xenia frowned, leading Yosef upstairs. โ€œI donโ€™t know why heโ€™s so stubborn about going abroad.โ€

They reached the study and knocked. Xenia said, โ€œCedric, itโ€™s Mom and your cousin.โ€

โ€œCome in,โ€ Cedricโ€™s voice replied.

Xenia pushed open the door to reveal a chaotic study, books piled everywhere. โ€œWhatโ€™s going on!โ€ Xenia frowned. โ€œYour cousin is here, and thereโ€™s no place to even put a foot down!โ€

โ€œItโ€™s fine,โ€ Yosef replied.

Cedric smiled at Yosef. โ€œSorry, I didnโ€™t know you were coming. Iโ€™m packing up these books. Theyโ€™ll just gather dust if I leave them here.โ€

Xenia became anxious. โ€œWhy are you so stubborn!โ€ She hugged Cedric. โ€œMom knows that the blind date with Reyna made you uncomfortable, but that was the Fischer familyโ€™s fault. Theyโ€™re the ones who lost face. You donโ€™t have to leave your hometown because of them.โ€

Cedric calmly waited for her to finish, then smiled gently. โ€œDo you think thatโ€™s the reason?โ€

Xenia was taken aback. โ€œThen what else could it be?โ€

Cedric lightly furrowed his brows, his tone heavy. โ€œIโ€™m an adult. I want to decide my own life. I donโ€™t want every move I make to be under your surveillance and control.โ€

Xenia was shocked. My son is leaving because of me? โ€œWhat are you talking about?โ€

Xenia, unaware of her own failings, laughed coldly. โ€œIโ€™m your mom. Everything I do, isnโ€™t it all for your own good?โ€

Cedric glanced at Yosef. โ€œSee! Now you understand why I want to leave, right?โ€

Xenia became agitated, shouting, โ€œIn front of Yosef, what are you saying! I do everything for your own good, and Iโ€™m wrong?โ€

Cedric snorted lightly. โ€œFor my own good? Doing good for me means scheming to separate me from the person I love and then forcing on me someone you like?โ€

โ€œYou!โ€ Xenia was speechless with anger, her face turning blue. โ€œSo in the end, itโ€™s still because of Sienna? That thing I did, even though I shouldnโ€™t have, so what? Are you going to judge me?โ€

โ€œI dare not,โ€ Cedric said coldly. โ€œDo as you please.โ€

โ€œYouโ€ฆโ€ Xenia began.

Yosef hurriedly pulled Xenia aside. โ€œDidnโ€™t you ask me to persuade Cedric? Let me talk to him.โ€

โ€œYosefโ€ฆโ€ Xeniaโ€™s face alternated between blue and white as she patted Yosefโ€™s hand. โ€œAuntie leaves it to you.โ€

Xenia glared at her son and sighed as she left the study. The moment the door closed, Cedric looked at Yosef and smiled faintly. โ€œYosef, you donโ€™t need to persuade me. My mind is made up.โ€

Yosef looked at his cousin and shook his head helplessly. โ€œWhat if I told you Sienna and Josiah broke up?โ€
