Chapter 326
Rosie was at the care home. Amy bundled her in a coat, hat, and scarf. Rosie chuckled, โItโs just a few steps; isnโt this excessive?โ
โItโs necessary. How could it not be?โ Amy, older than Rosie, replied disapprovingly. โItโs windy outside. Better to be cautious.โ
โAlright, Iโll listen to you, Amy,โ Rosie said. โLetโs go.โ
Amy smiled, linking arms with Rosie as they walked out the door. Since it was Christmas Day, the care home had organized New Yearโs activities, gathering residents who couldnโt go home to prevent loneliness. Participation, of course, was voluntary.
Amy persuaded Rosie to join. Reaching the activity room, Amy found a seat and helped Rosie sit. โMs. Miller, wait here a moment. Iโll get you some snacks. There will be a show soon; we can enjoy it together.โ
โOkay,โ Rosie nodded with a smile, removing her coat and placing it on the chair beside her to save Amyโs place. Suddenly, she realized someone had moved it. โExcuse me,โ she said, her eyes widening as she turned to the person. โMy caregiver sits here. I canโt see well, and she helps me. Could you please find another seat?โ
Howard remained seated. Rosieโs eyes widened further. This person is annoyed, she thought. How rude and inconsiderate!
Howard casually placed her coat on the chair beside him and looked at her. Hmm? Is she upset? he thought. He smiled. โI asked your caregiver to move over one seat. Is that alright?โ
Rosie thought, That voiceโฆ Surprised, she murmured, โItโs youโฆโ
Howard nodded. โYes, itโs me. Happy New Year.โ
Rosieโs expression softened into a gentle smile. โHappy New Year. Didnโt you go home for Christmas?โ
โYeah, I just got back. How about you?โ
โMe too,โ Rosie replied.
Amy returned with two plates of snacks. Seeing Howard, they nodded quietly. Howard took a plate and offered it to Rosie. โLet me take this. If you need help, just ask.โ
Rosie smiled gratefully, thinking how kind he was. She offered, โThanks. You can help yourself too; I canโt see well, so youโll need to get your own.โ
โThanks,โ Howard said.
โYouโre welcome,โ Rosie replied.
Onstage, a performance began. Rosie listened to the lively sounds, while Howard, unconcerned with the show, focused on Rosieโs eyes. Are they still swollen? Is her head still hurting? he wondered.
He swallowed and softly asked, โAre your eyes alright?โ
โHmm?โ Rosie turned to him, paused, and laughed. โTheyโre okay, except I canโt see.โ
Howard frowned. โI heard that some people canโt see, but still feel pain and discomfort. How about you?โ
Rosie tilted her head curiously. โSo others experience this too? I wasnโt feeling well yesterday, but after seeing the doctor and taking some medicine, I feel much better now.โ
Howard felt relieved the medicine seemed to be working. Rosie blinked, looking at him in confusion. โBy the way, your voiceโฆ you sound quite young. Why are you living in a nursing home?โ Howard was momentarily speechless.
โIโm sorry,โ Rosie realized sheโd asked something inappropriate. โDid I offend you? You donโt have to answer. Iโm sorryโฆโ
โItโs okay,โ Howard said softly, looking at her calm face. โA few years ago, I suffered a severe injury. Iโm still recovering, and the environment here is good. I come regularly to recuperate.โ
โI understand,โ Rosie replied. Even though he wasnโt well, he still jumped into the lake to save me. He has a kind heart.
Rosie found a piece of candy and offered it to Howard. โHere, a sweet treat for the New Year. Things will only improve.โ
โOkay,โ Howard took the candy, a smile spreading across his lips.
After the event, Howard walked behind Rosie as they returned. At her door, he stopped her. โHold on.โ
Rosie turned. โWhatโs the matter?โ
Howard produced a small box from his pocketโa pencil case. He handed it to Rosie. โThis is for you, a New Yearโs gift.โ
Rosie was surprised. Given our relationship, how can I accept a gift from him? she thought. She quickly waved her hand, refusing. โI canโt accept this.โ
โJust take it,โ Howard said. โThe company gave them out at the year-end party, and I donโt need it. If you donโt want it, Iโll throw it away.โ
Rosie hesitated. โOkay, thank you.โ
โYouโre welcome,โ Howard replied.
Rosie accepted the case, rubbing it gently. โWhat is this?โ As a designer, she quickly identified it. Her eyes widened. โIs it a drawing pen?โ
Howard nodded. โYes. I wasnโt sure if youโd find it useful.โ
Rosie smiled. โI definitely will. Iโm in design.โ
Howard raised an eyebrow. โReally? Isnโt that convenient? A happy accident, Iโd say.โ
It was a pleasant surprise. Rosie laughed. โThen Iโll keep it.โ
โYep,โ Howard said.
Rosie turned to go inside but stopped, remembering something. โBy the way, we havenโt introduced ourselves. My name is Rosie.โ
โMy name is Hendrix,โ Howard replied.
Rosie softly repeated, smiling as she held up the pencil case. โHendrix, thanks for the pencil. Once my eyes are better, Iโll make good use of it.โ
โOkay.โ Howard waited for Amy to help Rosie inside and close the door before he turned to leave. As he looked up, his eyes darkened.
Outside, by the flower bed, Yvette stood, her eyes filled with shock and disbelief. Howard frowned, quickly descended the steps, and went to her. Without a word, he grabbed her wrist. โLetโs talk outside.โ
Yvette, dazed and with a throbbing headache, hadnโt fully recovered when Howard pulled her from the courtyard. Suddenly, she snapped back to reality. โHoward! Let go of me!โ
Howard turned back, his tone serious. โCalm down. Whatever you want to know or ask, Iโll tell you.โ
โReally?โ Yvetteโs eyes reddened as she let out a bitter laugh. โAre you ready to talk now? Didnโt you keep assuring me you hadnโt betrayed me or seen someone else?โ
Howard furrowed his brows, remaining silent.
โSpeak up!โ Yvetteโs eyes blazed with anger as she grabbed his collar. โHoward, have you gone mute?โ
