Chapter 33: Let Mr. Winford Apologize to Bessie!
The Greene family. As soon as Ophelia entered, she heard a furious shout: โDid you dare to come back?!โ
Looking at the furious Samuel, Ophelia remained unfazed and said, โWasnโt it you who called me back?โ
โDo you still dare to talk back? Look at what youโve done to Bessie!โ
Bessie had just returned from the hospital and was lying on the sofa with a pale face, while Erin was beside her, wiping her sweat with a look of concern. Seeing Ophelia, Erinโs eyes turned red, and her expression was filled with disappointment. โOphelia! I believed I had never treated you poorly. I had regarded you as my own daughter since you were little, but how did you repay me? How could you be so cruel and treat Bessie like this?!โ
Ophelia: โWhat did I do to her?โ
Samuel angrily said, โYou threw your sister into the water for several hours, causing her to get a fever! Do you still dare to deny it?!โ
Bessie cried weakly and aggrieved, โOphelia! I knew you did it on purpose! I just wanted to know what I did to offend you that made you target me like this!โ
Seeing Bessie like this, Samuel felt a deep pang of heartache and became even more furious. He grabbed a cup and smashed it hard at Opheliaโs feet, and the shards instantly scattered all over the ground!
Pointing at the scattered pieces on the ground, Samuel said, โKneel down! If you donโt properly apologize to Bessie today and earn her forgiveness, donโt even think about getting up!โ
Ophelia dodged the fragments that almost splashed on her calf and, upon hearing those words, felt a chill in her eyes. She glanced at her father with a mocking look and said, โDad, just getting wet and having a fever made you this angry? When I was little, Bessie pushed me into the icy water and I had a fever of forty degrees, but I never saw you react like this.โ
โIf I remember correctly, at that time you not only didnโt make Bessie and me apologize, but also blamed me for being too sick and scaring her, right?โ
Looking back now, I really canโt believe that those were the words spoken by her father!
โClearly, I am your daughter, while Bessie is just your stepdaughter. With such obvious differential treatment, anyone who doesnโt know would think she is your illegitimate child and I am the one you adopted!โ
Samuel was hit at his most vulnerable point, and his face instantly turned pale. He slammed the table and shouted, โWhat nonsense are you talking about? Say it again?!โ
Ophelia had a fearless expression on her face. โWasnโt what I saidโฆ correct?โ
โYouโฆ!โ Samuelโs expression changed several times. โBessie didnโt do that on purpose; how could it be the same as what you did?!โ
โShe didnโt do it on purpose, so why canโt I?โ Ophelia tugged at her lip and suddenly looked at Bessie. โSpeaking of which, I thought Bessie would sincerely apologize to me when we met today, but I didnโt expect Bessie to not mention a word about it!โ
โApologizeโฆ?โ Bessie paused, doubting whether she had heard correctly. What did she apologize for? Shouldnโt it have been Ophelia who apologized to her?
โShouldnโt it be?โ Ophelia crossed her arms and looked at her with a half-smile. โAt that time, Elizabeth couldnโt tell right from wrong and insulted me, saying I was born of a mother but raised without one, lacking quality and upbringing. As my sister, I thought Bessie would stand up for me, at least to defend her sister. But not only did Bessie not do that, she actually apologized on my behalf, thereby confirming the insults directed at me. I really wanted to ask, what was Bessieโs true intention?โ
โWhy were you thrown into the water by Graham, who was next to Mr. Winford? Wasnโt it because of your actions that made him misunderstand and think you were in cahoots with those who bullied me? After all, who would have thought that the person who spoke ill of me alongside others would actually be my sister! Donโt you think so?โ
Samuel was astonished; he had never heard of these things before! His expression darkened. โBessie, is what Ophelia said true?โ
Although he favored Bessie, he still had some affection for Ophelia and Samuel, after allโฆ
โIโฆ I am not, I didnโt!โ Faced with Samuelโs probing and doubtful gaze, Bessie was on the verge of tears and hurriedly denied it.
Ophelia said, โWas there or wasnโt there? There were so many people at the banquet; do you think everyone was blind and deaf? Just ask someone at random, and youโll find out!โ
Bessieโs expression suddenly froze. She hurriedly lowered her head, not daring to meet Samuelโs gaze, and her eyes turned red with grievance: โAt that time, I was apologizing for Ophelia because she had offended Elizabeth with her words. I was afraid that she would be blamed by others, so I spoke up! I was doing it for her good, and I never expected that Ophelia would think of me this way!โ
Samuelโs expression immediately began to waver. Ophelia scoffed inwardly and unceremoniously refuted the other partyโs flawed argument.
โI was Mr. Winfordโs wife, and that Elizabeth only had the right to flatter me. Not to mention that she was the one who acted unreasonably in the first place; even if I were in the wrong, what right did she have to blame me?โ
Samuel immediately frowned. Ophelia made a valid point. In that case, what was there to apologize to Elizabeth for?
Bessie forced a stiff smile and said, โI was in a hurry at the time and didnโt react in timeโฆโ
โSo this matter was something you should have apologized to me for, right?โ Ophelia interrupted her.
Bessie bit her lip.
Erin spoke up, โOphelia, Bessie said it wasnโt intentionalโฆโ
โIs it that if it wasnโt intentional, thereโs no need to apologize? You all called me back today, wasnโt it just to make me apologize? Now that it turns out she was the one who made the mistake, thereโs no need to apologize?โ
Erin choked.
โIs the differential treatment taken this far? Dad, I am your biological daughter, right?โ Ophelia asked Samuel again.
Samuelโs expression was somewhat unpleasant. โBessie, apologize to your sister!โ
Bessie pinched her palm and forced out a very reluctant smile, โโฆOphelia, Iโm sorry.โ
โUm.โ Ophelia replied, looking as if she reluctantly accepted it.
Bessie felt like she was going to vomit blood. She gritted her teeth and said, โOphelia, since I apologized to you, what about you? Arenโt you going to say sorry for throwing me into the water?โ
She stared at Ophelia, waiting for her to say that it wasnโt intentional. Then she shot back โ wasnโt she also not intentional? Hadnโt she just apologized a moment ago?
Ophelia immediately saw what she was thinking. She smiled slightly and took out her phone. โSure, Iโll call Graham right now,โ she said.
โโฆWhat did you call Graham for?โ
โDidnโt you want to hear an apology? It was Graham who threw you into the water, so if anyone needs to apologize, it should be him!โ
Ophelia began to dial the number, โAre you still not satisfied even if Graham comes to apologize? In that case, I might as well call Mr. Winford; Graham is his subordinate, and he should bear some responsibility as wellโฆโ
She was not joking; she was actually ready to make the call.
Samuel and Bessie both changed their expressions!
โWait a minute!โ Samuel hurriedly stopped her. โForget it, forget it. Since it wasnโt intentional, why apologize?โ
That was Mr. Winford! Asking him to apologize? Bessie was tired of living?! Even Graham, who was Mr. Winfordโs most trusted confidant, was treated with utmost respect by everyone. Who would dare to make him say sorry!
