Aurora was speechless. She pressed a hand to her forehead. “Why do you and your cousin always say the exact same thing?”

“Because it’s the truth.”

Aurora asked in confusion, “And why is that?”

“You don’t get it. My cousin’s like a rare tree that finally blossoms. It’s already a miracle he’s not bringing home a man, and now he’s actually bringing a woman, and such a beautiful one at that. If I were his parents, I’d agree on the spot without a second thought.”

Megan patted Aurora’s shoulder, reassuring her. “Come on, don’t overthink it. His parents are both easy to get along with.” She thought back for a moment. In her memory, her aunt had always treated her well. When she was little, her aunt loved buying her all kinds of princess dresses. Later, as she grew up, their contact became less frequent. But she still remembered her aunt’s warm smile clearly. So deep down, Megan believed her aunt would never make things difficult for Aurora.

Aurora told herself she should just listen to Megan. After all, she had experience–she had met Lucas‘ parents before and knew them at least a little. If Megan said they had good tempers, then it would probably be fine. In that moment, Aurora even felt a wave of relief.

Still, she thought it wasn’t right to arrive empty-handed, so she bought some health supplements based on her mother’s usual preferences. From what Lucas had said, his mother loved traveling. That was why his father had stepped down early, handing the company over to Lucas. The couple had since set off to see the world together. It was reckless yet courageous, and Aurora couldn’t help but admire it. It was also clear that Lucas‘ father did it out of deep love for his wife. She could see that Lucas had truly grown up surrounded by love. So, bringing gifts to win over Lucas‘ mother was definitely the right move!

When Aurora got back, she tucked everything neatly into the trunk, not even telling Lucas about it.

The moment she walked in, though, she saw the table already stacked with supplements and rare collectibles that could only be found at auctions. Surprised, Aurora asked, “Why did you buy so much?”

“Don’t you want me to help you look good in front of my parents?” Lucas answered without hiding it. He wasn’t the type to play the silent benefactor. He wanted Aurora to see what he did for her, to slowly get used to his presence.

Aurora looked at the pile of gifts that nearly crowded the table. On any other day, she might have thought Lucas was simply putting great importance on meeting his elders. But now she knew these things had all been prepared for her sake, which meant the person Lucas truly cared about was her. Winning over his parents was only so that they wouldn’t make things hard for her.

Aurora’s eyes grew misty. How could she not understand that? It was precisely because she understood that his love felt so heavy and real, filling her with warmth.

“You don’t have to treat me so well.”

Lucas, reading her heart, stepped forward and pulled her into his arms. “Silly girl, if I don’t treat you well, then who else would I treat well?”

The seed planted long ago had taken root, and there was no way he would let it go now. He had always been slow to express emotions. Though he grew up watching his parents‘ affection, the Carter family was still a large clan, where rivalries and power struggles were commonplace.
