Chapter 604
โIn the middle of the day?โ Josephโs voice was laced with suspicion.
Judy gave a light cough, feigning a bit of embarrassment. โWell, itโs your fault, isnโt it?โ
That only confused Joseph more. What did she mean by that? He hadnโt done anything.
Besides, heโd been busy handling follow-ups the moment he left; he hadnโt had the time to bother her about anything. She was the one who hadnโt picked up his calls, and now she was still making excuses. That realization irritated him. He felt like Judy was deliberately avoiding the truth, lying to cover something up. Was she seriously trying to shift the blame back onto him at this point?
โWhatโs that supposed to mean? Are you just trying to mess with me now?โ Joseph asked directly, determined to hear what excuse sheโd come up with next.
Judy didnโt even hesitate. โWhat do you think? You wore me out. We went at it so long, my body couldnโt take it. I finally managed to get some rest, and then you kept calling. Iโd just dozed off when your phone blew up again. If it were you, wouldnโt you be annoyed too?โ
At that, Josephโs anger doused itself like a fire hit with cold water. She did have a point. If it had been him in that situation, heโd be mad too. Who wouldnโt be annoyed at having their sleep interrupted?
His tone softened noticeably. โJudyโฆ are you really telling the truth?โ
โOf course I am!โ Judy said firmly, full of conviction. โWhy would I lie to you? Iโm being honest here. Why would you even think Iโm not? If thatโs how you feel, then so be it. I canโt hold onto a heart that was never with me to begin with.โ
Joseph instinctively began apologizing. โIโm sorry, Judy. Itโs my fault. I wonโt do it again. Donโt worry, from now on, I wonโt jump to the worst conclusions.โ
Judy didnโt bother asking what exactly he meant by โthe worst conclusions.โ Her gaze drifted to Kenneth, who was now slowly walking toward her. He had thrown on a coat, but his chest remained bare, casually exposed. Just the sight of him sent a wave of heat rushing through her. This manโฆ no wonder heโd spent so many years abroadโshe was satisfied with him in every way. In that regard, he was miles ahead of Joseph.
As Kenneth approached, his eyes glinted with unspoken intent, silently asking: Ready for round two? Judyโs smile deepened.
Joseph probably never imagined that his suspicions had actually been right on the mark. But because he chose to trust her, he hadnโt followed that line of thought.
With a sugary-sweet look directed at Kenneth, Judy said lightly, โGood. Thatโs how it should be. Donโt overthink next time. You should trust me. Thatโs what really matters.โ
Before Joseph could say anything else, she added quickly, โAlright, Iโve got something to deal with. Letโs talk later.โ Then she ended the call.
Joseph stared at the dark screen, frowning in confusion. What just happened? Why did she hang up so fast? This wasnโt like the Judy he knew.
