Her parents were visibly stunned, both looking at Megan in confusion, unable to understand what had brought on this sudden change.
But Megan knew exactly what she was doing.
โMom, Dad, I canโt just sit around and do nothing. My best friend is lying in a hospital, her life hanging by a thread. How could I possibly stay home? It doesnโt sit right with me.โ
Eleanor Hayes, Meganโs mother, exchanged a glance with her husband, Robert Quinn.
They both knew how close Megan and Aurora had always been. Theyโd grown up together. Their bond ran deep. That alone gave her every reason to be worried about Aurora. Moreover, beyond that, the two families had always shared a strong bond.
In a situation like this, it wouldnโt feel right for Megan to stand by and do nothing. Paying a visit was the least she could do. With that thought, Eleanor and Robert felt more at ease and decided not to stop her.
โAlright, you can go,โ Robert said. โBut you have to be careful. If anything happens, promise youโll tell us right away.โ
Megan nodded. She knew they were only concerned for her, and there was no need to say more. They meant well, and arguing wouldnโt help.
โDonโt worry, Iโll call as soon as I arrive. If anything comes up, youโll be the first to know.โ
Only then did her parents walk her to the door, reminding her again and again to be careful. Aside from that, there wasnโt much more they could do. Letting her go was the best support they could give. And as parents, they understood that.
Megan had learned where to go after speaking with Grace. Back at home, Grace was also thinking of heading overseas to check on her daughter. So much time had passed with no news, and the worry was eating her alive. She truly didnโt know what else to do.
Just then, Megan arrived. To Grace, it felt like a lifeline had appeared out of nowhere. Finally, she had someone she could talk to and lean on. When Megan entered the house, Grace was sitting on the couch, her eyes blank, staring off into nothing.
It was Arnold who noticed her first. He greeted her respectfully, โMiss Quinn, youโre here.โ
Megan nodded. โHowโs Madam Grace doing? Is she home?โ
โShe is, Miss Quinn. No need to worry.โ With that, Arnold led her into the living room. What Megan saw next made her heart drop. Just in that short span of time, how had Grace changed so much? Her gaze was unfocused, her complexion pale and worn. Even the way she looked at things seemed distant, unable to hold on.
It made Megan all the more grateful sheโd decided to come today. She shouldโve come sooner.
โMadam Grace,โ Megan called out gently, as though afraid to startle her.
The sound did make Grace jump slightly. She hadnโt even noticed Megan entering the room.
โOh, Megan, when did you get here?โ As soon as she registered who it was, Grace instinctively greeted her.
