Chapter 99
Lena had already dismissed Cameron's claim in her heart. The answer was no.
Facing Lena's skepticism, Cameron replied indifferently, "A standard expert takes ten minutes or more to reach the mountaintop and return. A top-tier expert needs only three."
"So, you're bragging?" Lena crossed her arms, looking at him sharply. Anyone attempting to deceive her would be quickly exposed.
"I didn't expect your thorough research," Cameron said. "You even know the time for top-tier experts."
"Let me tell you," Lena retorted, "the precise time for a top-tier expert is two minutes." A hint of pride played on her lips. She was the top-tier expert he referred to.
Cameron calmly watched her. His three-minute estimate included time to deal with snipers; hers was simply a roundtrip calculation. He didn't argue. "Colonel Bailey," he said, "as a top-tier expert, you know some can complete this task in 30 seconds."
A tremor flickered in her gaze. She knew who he meant—the world's top five! Their abilities surpassed even her Combatant Commander's—a lifelong goal of hers.
She would have taken such a claim seriously from the Combatant Commander. From this man? Ridiculous! It wasn't about appearances, but she couldn't believe this man was among the world's top five. He might struggle with basic martial arts! Besides, those in the top five were usually reclusive, centuries-old elders.
"My friend," Lena sneered, her gaze hardening, "you seem to have a talent for unembarrassed bragging. I suspect you're in cahoots with those guys, trying to get out of this."
"Colonel Bailey," Cameron said calmly, "if you don't believe me, go to the mountain and see for yourself. Verify if their accomplice was indeed killed by me."
He didn't want to waste his time.
"You want to trick me onto the mountaintop so you can escape," Lena said. "Do you think I'm that easily fooled?" She smirked, believing she'd seen through him.
"Stay put! When my teammates arrive, I'll investigate myself. I'll conclude after assessing the scene."
Cameron shook his head helplessly. If he were working with the sniper, how could she be unharmed?
"What are you shaking your head for? Dissatisfied with my judgment?" Lena frowned.
"Colonel Bailey, if I were their accomplice, why didn't the sniper shoot you?" Cameron asked.
"Simple," Lena replied confidently. "My skills scared the sniper off, and he abandoned his accomplices to escape."
Cameron was speechless.
"What's with that expression? Doubting my abilities?" Lena's annoyance grew.
Cameron remained silent.
"Hey! Are you deaf? I'm talking to you!" Lena's temper flared.
Cameron ignored her. Frustrated, Lena decided to teach him a lesson.
