Chapter 98

"What?" Peggy exclaimed, shocked. "Ms. Jones wants to hire that guy as a bodyguard?"

Cameron flatly refused. "Ms. Jones, don't be ridiculous."

"I'm not joking," Laura insisted, her expression serious. "I mean it!"

But Cameron shook his head, his tone cold. "Sorry, Ms. Jones. You'll have to find someone else."

Laura felt a pang of disappointment, though she'd anticipated this. Still, she'd wanted to try.

"What a bastard!" Peggy fumed. "Ms. Jones thinks highly of you! That's why she wanted to hire you. Why are you acting like this?" She was already angry with Cameron, and now even more so.

Ignoring Peggy, Cameron addressed Laura: "Ms. Jones, I'll give you one last reminder. If there's nothing else, get back to Leving quickly."

"Thanks for the reminder," Laura replied, "but I'm not going back." She had reasons for staying in Yrando—only half a month remained before her life would no longer be her own. She needed to use this time to rectify past regrets.

"Suit yourself," Cameron responded nonchalantly.

Laura's heart ached at his cold tone. "Ms. Jones, I'm relieved Colonel Bailey is looking after you. I'll be going now."

He turned to leave. Laura watched, her delicate hands clenched, but this time she didn't stop him. Knowing his personality, she understood his decisions were immutable. He only changed for her, but even then… The thought left her with complicated feelings.

Chapter 94

"You can't go yet!" Lena stopped Cameron.

"Colonel Bailey, is there anything else?" Cameron turned to face her.

Lena's eyes were cold and serious. "At present, you cannot be ruled out as a suspect. You cannot leave."

"Do you suspect I'm in cahoots with them?" Cameron frowned.

"At least, that possibility cannot be ruled out," Lena said, scrutinizing him. "When Ms. Jones and Ms. Lee were attacked, where were you?"

"I've already said: I went up the mountain to deal with a sniper. We were shot at," Cameron replied.

"Went up the mountain to deal with a sniper? Mr. Cameron, do you think that's credible?" Lena was unconvinced.

"Why not?" Cameron asked calmly.

"Do you know how long a round trip from here to the mountaintop takes?" Lena questioned, noting the loopholes in his story. Even for her, it would take at least two minutes. Would a professional sniper expose himself and let the target escape? The distance was roughly 400 feet. At that range, a professional sniper would almost certainly hit their target, unless Cameron was a top-five sniper in the world. But that was impossible; even she wasn't in the top 100, and she was likely to become the youngest female general in the country's history. They weren't in the same league. How could this ordinary man achieve what she couldn't?
