Chapter 229
"Cameron, we're here," Dakota said gently. At the entrance to Azure Residence, she looked at him in the passenger seat. He returned her smile.
"Then I'll head back first."
"Okay. If you run into any trouble, call me. Don't hide it from me."
She bit her lip, trembling slightly.
"Don't worry. I'm fine." Cameron smiled gently. "I'll leave now. Remember to send me a message when you get home."
"Okay." Dakota nodded.
She drove away in her BMW 320i.
Cameron returned to the villa, went to the bedroom, and lay on the bed. The day's events replayed in his mind like a movie. He hadn't expected Laura to have a fiancé, and to be marrying in a few weeks. He was confused. Why had she traveled to Yrando to find him if she was already engaged? She'd even hidden her whereabouts from Alan.
Had she really felt guilty about what happened seven years ago? Yet, when she'd sprained her ankle at the waterfront, she'd rested her head on his back. And she'd cried beneath the wreckage. Was it all an act? Was she struggling with something else?
He suddenly laughed at himself. Why was he being so sentimental? Probably anyone who injured Laura would evoke her concern.
He should forget her. Alan was her ideal choice; their families would join forces—what she likely wanted most. As an outsider, he shouldn't worry so much.
He shook his head and rested it on his hands. After pondering for a while, he turned his thoughts to his next plan. Sooner or later, he would go to Leving to settle his feud with the Morgan family, especially concerning his mother's death fifteen years ago. He would deal with them one by one. He would never forget his mother's desperate look before she died, or his father's coldness in the face of her death.
"The Morgans and the Xanders—just wait and see!"
Half an hour later, Dakota drove home. She parked in the building's basement and walked to the door of apartment 302. Just as she was about to get her key, she heard hurried footsteps above. Someone was coming down the stairs. Presuming it was a neighbor in an emergency, she unlocked her door. However, as she was about to enter, two men appeared behind her. One covered her mouth with a handkerchief.
Caught off guard, she struggled violently, but was overpowered. After a fierce struggle, she fainted in their arms. The two men exchanged glances, then quickly carried her away.
