Chapter 96

Boom!

A military pickup truck roared, screeching to a halt in a controlled drift beside the gray van. The driver's door opened, and a woman, pistol in hand, gracefully exited.

Bang! Bang! Bang!

She fired at the four burly men, the gunshots piercing the air. Her black eyes remained calm and sharp. Wearing a camouflage vest, long pants, and a ponytail, her figure was exceptionally slender and agile. The four men collapsed.

Peggy's beautiful eyes widened. "What impressive skills!" she exclaimed. Laura, too, was surprised, recognizing the uniformed woman as Colonel Lena Bailey of the Capital Military Region—Andura's youngest female colonel.

Lena knew both Laura, the eldest daughter of the Leving Jones family, and her secretary, Peggy Lee. She was, however, surprised to find Laura in the small town of Yrando, unguarded. But this wasn't the time for such thoughts. One accomplice remained.

"Ms. Lee, return to the car. There's another accomplice," Lena said, concerned for Peggy's safety.

"Okay!" Peggy, a shiver running through her, quickly returned to the vehicle.

Lena approached the van, gun drawn. Carefully reaching the driver's side door, her face determined, she opened it and pointed her weapon. "Don't move! Hands up!"

The driver's seat was empty. Lena's eyes narrowed.

Swish!

A figure leaped from the van's back seat, delivering a vicious kick to Lena's head—a blow strong enough to shatter stone. Undeterred, Lena nimbly dodged, countered with a sweeping leg, and then, as he tried to rise, struck his neck with a hand chop. He grunted and fell.

Lena smirked, a hint of arrogance in her expression. She holstered her weapon; she hadn't shot him, intending to keep one alive. These were foreign mercenaries she'd been tracking since their arrival a week prior. She hadn't expected them to target Laura.

"Ms. Jones, Ms. Lee, it's all right now," Lena said, approaching the black Lincoln.

"Phew!" Peggy sighed, relief evident on her still-frightened face. "Colonel Bailey, thank you. You arrived just in time."

Laura emerged, her gaze chillingly sweeping the fallen men. Again, someone had tried to kill her.

"Ms. Lee, Ms. Jones, I'm glad you're unharmed," Lena said. "Was anyone else present?"

Peggy's eyes widened. Lena's question reminded her of Cameron, who'd warned them to stay in the car before rushing off. Hopefully, he was safe. Laura's eyes, too, held anxiety.

Just as she began to search for Cameron, a voice called, "I'm here."

Laura turned to see Cameron, unharmed. Relief washed over her. Peggy, however, frowned. He appeared spotless, his clothes untouched by dust. Her worry instantly shifted to anger.

For a moment, Peggy had believed Cameron had risked his life for them. Instead, he'd found a hiding place. This coward had fled.
