Chapter 97
“Cameron, you chickened out! Coward!” Peggy angrily pointed at Cameron. “What a waste of time for Ms. Jones to come all this way to find you! When danger struck, you abandoned us and hid!”
“I abandoned you?” Cameron was puzzled.
“What? You refuse to admit it?” Peggy’s annoyance grew at Cameron’s apparent feigned ignorance.
“I went to deal with the sniper on the mountain,” Cameron explained, aware of the misunderstanding.
“Deal with the sniper?” Peggy looked at him incredulously. “You’re making it up! You went up the mountain? Dealt with a sniper? Do you know how far the mountaintop is? Do you think you’re Superman?” She clearly didn’t believe him.
The mountaintop was approximately 130 feet above them. Even a well-trained soldier would need several minutes to climb it. Cameron, however, looked clean, composed, and showed no signs of exertion. And there was a top-tier sniper on the mountaintop! Considering the physical demands of engaging such an opponent, and the fact that Cameron was unarmed, the timeline was impossible. From the time he left the car to his reappearance, barely a minute had passed. Killing a professional mercenary, let alone climbing a mountain, in that time was inconceivable.
If Cameron wasn’t exaggerating, what was he doing?
Instead of further explanation, Cameron turned to Laura. “Ms. Jones, do you know these people?”
“No,” Laura shook her head.
“Do you know who sent them?”
“No idea.”
“Any suspects?”
“No.”
Cameron was speechless at Laura’s lack of information. Such situations weren’t unusual for her, but she hadn’t expected such audacity—mercenaries sent to kill her on Andura’s territory. She’d only encountered similar incidents abroad. This reminded her of her first meeting with Cameron seven years prior, when a top-tier assassin had attempted to kill her. Cameron had saved her then. A hint of tenderness flickered in Laura’s eyes. “Cameron, you saved me again. Colonel Bailey, thank you for your help.”
“Ms. Jones, why are you thanking him? Colonel Bailey saved us! Don’t be fooled by that guy!” Peggy interrupted, frustrated.
“Peggy, you don’t understand,” Laura said coldly.
Peggy, seeing Laura’s firm tone, fell silent, though her annoyance towards Cameron was evident. This bastard, she thought, not only putting on an act, but causing me to be scolded by Laura twice! I'll expose him!
Ignoring Peggy, Cameron looked at Laura calmly. “Ms. Jones, it’s too dangerous here. You should return to Leving immediately.” Another attack was inevitable. While the Jones family’s influence was strong in Leving, it was limited in Yrando.
“Cameron, are you worried about me?” Laura’s eyes sparkled as she looked at him.
Cameron’s expression remained cold, as if he intended to leave.
“Wait a minute!” Laura stopped him.
“Is there anything else?” Cameron frowned.
“That…” Laura’s eyes sparkled. “Can I hire you again as my bodyguard?”
