Chapter 358: Getting on Her Bad Side
Carlos attempted to embrace Nina, but she dodged him, rushing inside. The sounds of a conversation followed them.
"Sarah, this is my final request," Benett said weakly. "My parents aren't the sharpest tools in the shed; they don't understand the complexities of this. Only this will reassure them, and allow me to die in peace. Everything will eventually belong to Nina. Consider this my last wish. Get a lawyer; I haven't much time. Surely you don't want me to die unhappy?"
"But this doesn't make sense!" Sarah cried.
"" Cough, cough. "Please, just agree. Please!" Cough, cough.
"Don't do this All right, all right, I agree. I'll call a lawyer now." Sarah's crying stopped as Nina embraced her. "Mom, don't!"
The trio rejoiced at persuading Sarah, but Nina's intervention stunned and angered them. This setback was unwelcome.
"Nina?" Sarah asked, upset. Her husband was dying and requesting a divorce. It was unbearable. She assumed his fear and confusion stemmed from his parents' persuasive words, a misguided attempt to secure their future. That was the only explanation for such an irrational act.
Though Sarah wouldn't seize her husband's inheritance, her in-laws remained unconvinced. Their fussing tormented Benett in his final hours. "Whatever," she thought, "it's a formality. If they insist, I don't care. We're still husband and wife. This divorce is just legal protection for their assets."
Even Sarah couldn't refuse her dying husband's final request. However, seeing Nina's reaction, she assumed Nina had overheard and misunderstood. She comforted her: "Nina, don't cry. Your dad and I aren't really getting a divorce. We're still your parents."
Benett added, "Nina, don't be stubborn. Your mother and I have discussed this. Don't waste any more time."
Nina, however, was inconsolable. Overwhelmed with emotion, she could barely speak. She looked at the frail man. Even in his weakened state, he manipulated her and her mother, paving the way for his mistress and illegitimate children.
Nina, from an affluent family, had witnessed similar scenarios. She understood, even if incompletely, that allowing the divorce would leave her and her mother vulnerable to exploitation. "I don't agree, Dad. Are you really divorcing Mom? And leaving her with nothing?" Tears blurred her vision as she looked at Benett.
Benett felt uneasy under her gaze. He considered that at least Nina had Sarah, but he needed to provide for his other children.
"Dad! You're really leaving everything to someone else!" Nina exclaimed.
Benett's parents, easily provoked, reacted angrily. "Your father is dying! What about us, your elders? Since when are we strangers? How can you be so cold-hearted? Are you afraid of losing money? Do you even care about your father?"
Isabella, having overheard, cursed inwardly. Aren't you two old fogies terrified of losing your money? It's your family that doesn't care about Nina. You beasts!
The Quirk family, witnessing Isabella's rare outburst, were stunned. What had the Eatons done? They recalled Isabella mentioning Benett's affair and illegitimate children. Could this be connected?
