Chapter 360: I Would Never Divorce You
Outside the door, David's family overheard snippets of the conversation inside. Their shocked gazes were fixed on Carlos. Though he hadn't eavesdropped, their expressions prompted him to ask, "What did you hear?"
The three exchanged glances, hesitant to speak. They understood why Alexander had taken Sarah aside to talk privately. Even the most upright officials struggled with family disputes, they knew. Their principle was non-interference; they would reveal the truth to Sarah and let her decide. They recognized the temptation some might feel to withhold the truth, especially if a party was dying, prioritizing their pride over honesty. Therefore, they chose to feign ignorance until Sarah made her decision.
Inside, Nina's emotional turmoil was evident. Sarah finally understood Nina's earlier strange behavior in the hospital room. Perhaps fueled by maternal strength and the harsh reality of the situation, Sarah gritted her teeth, holding her distraught daughter close.
"Don't be afraid, Nina, I'm here! I'll never let anyone hurt you! Bennettโฆ you bastard!"
Alexander and Isabella breathed sighs of relief. Alexander said, "Sarah, decide before the lawyer arrives. Ask for help if you need it."
Tears streamed down Sarah's face, but a fierce gleam shone in her eyes.
The ward door opened, revealing Sarah's return. Perhaps a flicker of conscience remained, because Bennett surprisingly asked to speak with Sarah and Nina. "I'm sorry. If there's another life, I promise to make it up to you."
Sarah approached Bennett and chuckled lightly. "Really? I don't wish for a better next life; I only hope for a better this life."
Bennett started to speak, but Sarah interrupted, "Oh yes, I told the lawyers not to come. I've thought it over. I remember swearing at our wedding that I'd never leave you, that only death would part us, and I'd never divorce you!"
Terry and Vera's anxiety was palpable. This was what Bennett had fought for! How could she recant?
"Call your parents over! I'm curious to see if they have the nerve to say anything!" Their faces twisted with malice and anxiety. The others present openly expressed their disgust.
Carlos, however, was utterly bewildered. He held Nina's hand, her head bowed in quiet sorrow, unable to comprehend Sarah's actions. He found the idea of divorce absurd, knowing Sarah wasn't one for impulsive decisions or empty promises. She also didn't value material possessions; why the change of heart?
Noticing the expectant, almost gleeful expressions on David and the others' faces, Carlos's confusion deepened.
Bennett, initially swayed by Sarah's words, sensed something was wrong. Years of marriage had taught him to discern her anger from sorrow. This was not sorrow; it was blazing fury, a burning desire to see him dead.
Bennett's lips quivered. Weak and struggling to speak, he managed, "Honey, w-what's wrong? Why are you suddenlyโฆ You know me; I didn't really want a divorce. I justโฆ"
"I know you?" Sarah murmured, leaning closer. Her tone was ruthless. "Of course I know you. You're a good husband and a good father. So, everything we've strived for together will eventually belong to our daughter, won't it?"
