Chapter 309: Backseat Bickerings

Easton, not wanting to be misunderstood, explained, โ€œIโ€™m not trying to upset you; Iโ€™m just worried about you.โ€

โ€œEnough, just stop!โ€ Ellis gestured for Easton to be quiet. โ€œYour concern is worthless to me!โ€

โ€œMy concern is worthless, but Mortyโ€™s is worth something?โ€ Eastonโ€™s controlled anger reignited, his voice rising. The impulse to make Morty disappear resurfaced in his heart.

โ€œHis isnโ€™t worth anything, and neither is yours. Both of you are people I really dislike!โ€ Ellis didnโ€™t understand Eastonโ€™s comparison to Morty and shot him a cold look.

Growing up hearing that women were often unreasonable, she realized at that moment that men could be far more terrifying when they were being unreasonable.

Eastonโ€™s gloomy face brightened unexpectedly when he heard her say she disliked them both. The coldness in his eyes vanished instantly, and even his demeanor softened.

Making sure he hadnโ€™t misheard, he asked, โ€œYou really dislike Morty?โ€

โ€œNo kidding!โ€ Ellis responded irritably.

โ€œIf you dislike him, then why do you keep hanging out with him?โ€ Easton looked puzzled, not entirely blinded by the โ€œdislike for both.โ€ โ€œYou were even with him last nightโ€ฆโ€

โ€œI really dislike Morty, so stop causing trouble for me,โ€ Ellis said sharply, cutting him off. She told Easton this to downplay the situation. From Mortyโ€™s perspective, he liked her, and there was nothing wrong with that. From her perspective, he was indeed someone she disliked, but he had helped and saved her in the past; Easton attacking him was totally unwarranted.

Knowing she disliked Morty and still going after him showed that, far from Morty being the one with poor character, it was Easton who was truly despicable. His own character is flawed, so what right does he have to judge others?

If he did something unbearable and pushed her too far, she would catch a flight out tonight. She was done with Stonebridge and its unbearable people and situations that constantly ruined her mood, making it seem impossible to have a single good day.

โ€œSo, Mortyโ€™s inappropriate feelings for youโ€ฆโ€ Easton carefully watched her expression and felt he didnโ€™t need to ask; her demeanor clearly indicated she wouldnโ€™t like Morty. โ€œI wonโ€™t cause trouble; I was just really angry earlier.โ€

Easton could say just a couple of words, and Ellis would know what he was about to ask, rolling her eyes. She was fed up!

Does Easton really see himself as the sole ruler of the world, treating me as his possession? He cheated with Victoria during their marriage, sought reconciliation with Ellis without breaking it off with Victoriaโ€”clearly wanting to have his cake and eat it tooโ€”yet he couldnโ€™t stand other men liking her.

If asked who was the most disgusting man, it had to be him. You get angry and then you hurt people. You always say Iโ€™m uncultured, but I donโ€™t see any culture in you either, she said disdainfully.

In contrast, Morty, who didnโ€™t retaliate and even spoke up for Easton, seemed more cultured. Next to him, the usually dignified and proud Easton seemed crude, like a thug losing his temper and lashing out, his handsome features marred by his anger.

โ€œI already warned Morty, and he didnโ€™t listen. If I hit him, he brought it on himself,โ€ Easton didnโ€™t think he was in the wrong. It was Morty who was asking for it by trying to cover for the person he loved. โ€œDidnโ€™t you see how guilty he looked?โ€

โ€œWhy should he listen to you?โ€ Ellis couldnโ€™t stand Eastonโ€™s self-righteous attitude, as if his hitting Morty was justified, and Morty was at fault.

Being Eastonโ€™s childhood friend, Morty must have bad luck to end up with such a disgusting person! Her sense of fairness wasnโ€™t leaning towards anyone; she felt a bit of sympathy for Morty. However, she didnโ€™t realize that her sense of balance was actually tipping slightly.

Unable to answer Ellisโ€™s question, Easton fell silent. With nothing more to say, Ellis was tired of arguing with him. Today had renewed her perception of him as utterly unreasonable.

Ellis walked briskly, hoping to completely shake off Easton. Unfortunately, she couldnโ€™t. Midway, she remembered she had left the hospital room so hastily she hadnโ€™t taken anything, not even her personal items.

She decided to go back to the room, but Easton insisted on following her. Worried that Morty might still be there and weighing her options, she reached into Eastonโ€™s pockets.

After searching both sides and not finding his wallet, Ellis frowned and asked, โ€œWhereโ€™s your wallet?โ€

Her blatantly intimate gesture slightly lifted the heaviness in Eastonโ€™s heart, and he almost smiled.

Hearing she wanted his wallet, he admitted, โ€œI didnโ€™t bring it.โ€

โ€œThen use your phone to call me a cab.โ€ Without money, Ellis didnโ€™t want to walk back.

โ€œAre you going back?โ€ Easton looked back in the direction they had come from. โ€œYou still havenโ€™t had your check-up.โ€
