Chapter 228

Paloma had been crashing at the Montgomerys' for four days straight, and she clearly had no intention of leaving anytime soon. She treated their place like her own personal hotelโ€“playing around, eating whatever she wanted, and coming back to crash whenever she felt like it. Monica couldnโ€™t afford to offend her, so she had no choice but to tag along and keep her company. After a few days of this, Monica was completely wiped out, and her watch over Landon had loosened up a lot.

What she didnโ€™t know was that ever since Landon met Amelia, he couldnโ€™t get her out of his mind. โ€˜I really want to see her again,โ€™ he thought. Whenever he closed his eyes, all he could see was her smile and hear her voice. With Amelia around, Monica just seemed even more bland. He had absolutely no interest in her anymore.

He even regretted getting engaged to her. Taking advantage of Monicaโ€™s lowered guard, Landon finally found a chance to talk to Paloma alone. โ€œMiss Kyle, can you tell me more about her?โ€ he asked.

โ€œWho?โ€ Paloma asked, pretending to be clueless.

โ€œAmelia,โ€ Landon replied.

โ€œYouโ€™re really curious, huh?โ€ Paloma said.

Landon nodded seriously. He wasnโ€™t just curiousโ€“he missed her like crazy, his longing as deep as the sea.

โ€œWhatโ€™s your name?โ€ Paloma asked, turning the question back on him.

Landon looked lost. โ€œI donโ€™t remember. Monica calls me Lamo.โ€

Palomaโ€™s eye twitched. โ€˜Lamo? Sounds like "love Monica." Monica is so good at fooling herself,โ€™ she thought.

โ€œSo, where are you from?โ€ Paloma pressed.

โ€œI have no idea,โ€ Landon replied, shaking his head. โ€œI asked Monica, but she just said the past doesnโ€™t matter. She also told me Iโ€™m an orphan, with no family at all.โ€

โ€œAnd do you actually believe her?โ€ Paloma asked.

Landon hesitated for a moment, searching Palomaโ€™s eyes, then asked softly, โ€œCan I really trust you?โ€

โ€œOf course,โ€ Paloma said with a smile. โ€˜What a silly little brother,โ€™ she thought. He obviously already trusted herโ€“thatโ€™s why he came to her with his questions.

โ€œAt first, I trusted Monica. But lately, I feel like sheโ€™s hiding something from me,โ€ Landon admitted.

Palomaโ€™s smile grew even brighter. โ€œExactly. She really is lying to you.โ€

Landonโ€™s expression shifted, anger surging within him.

โ€œLet me tell you about Amelia first,โ€ Paloma said, shifting her position to get more comfortable. โ€œHer husbandโ€™s name is Landon. He was injured during a mission and ended up forgetting all about her.โ€

โ€œHe lost his memory too?โ€ Landonโ€™s heart skipped a beat. โ€˜What a coincidence. I lost my memory too,โ€™ he thought.

โ€œShe was devastated for a while, but then she pulled herself together and took charge of protecting her husbandโ€™s family business, but also protected her mother-in-law. Sheโ€™s a really strong woman,โ€ Paloma continued.

โ€œShe really isโ€ฆโ€ Landon murmured.

Landonโ€™s heart throbbed with pain again. โ€˜Just how did she pull all that off by herself?โ€™ he wondered. He just wanted to pull her into his arms and tell her everything would be okay.

This overwhelming urge made a wild idea pop into his headโ€“what if he was actually her amnesiac husband? โ€˜So thatโ€™s why she looks at me with so much love in her eyesโ€ฆ and why sheโ€™s so heartbroken that I donโ€™t remember her?โ€™ he wondered.

The more Landon thought about it, the more real it felt. It was like an invisible hand was squeezing his heartโ€“it hurt so much he could barely breathe. โ€˜Is it me? Am I really him?โ€™ he thought, his mind spinning.

โ€œLamo, are you starting to doubt your own identity?โ€ Paloma asked, her voice calm and unreadable.

Landon hesitated for a second, then nodded.

โ€œMonica never lets me leave or have any contact with the outside world. Itโ€™s hard not to start doubting everything,โ€ he admitted.

โ€œYeah, thatโ€™s true,โ€ Paloma agreed, nodding. She nodded with a smile. โ€œYouโ€™re pretty sharp. So, what are you going to do about it?โ€

โ€œGet my memories back,โ€ Landon said.

โ€œAnd what if you never remember?โ€ Paloma pressed.

Landon was taken aback. โ€œNo way! The doctors said most people with amnesia get their memories back eventually.โ€

โ€œBut Iโ€™ve been like this for yearsโ€“lost my memories, and nothingโ€™s ever come back,โ€ Paloma said, tapping the back of her head. โ€œItโ€™s been hurting for ages, and sometimes it still acts up out of nowhere.โ€

Landon stared at her in shock. โ€œWait, youโ€ฆ you lost your memory too? And you get those headaches?โ€ โ€˜No way, Iโ€™m not the only one?โ€™ he thought, his mind reeling.

โ€œHereโ€™s a secret, just between us,โ€ Paloma leaned in, dropping her voice to a whisper. โ€œWeโ€™re not really amnesiacs. Someone put a chip in our headsโ€“it blocks out everything from our past.โ€

Landonโ€™s jaw dropped in disbelief. Almost without thinking, his hand started to reach for the back of his head.

But Paloma quickly stopped him.

โ€œEverything here is under Monicaโ€™s control. Watch your expression,โ€ she warned.

A storm brewed in Landonโ€™s eyes. He took several deep breaths before he could calm himself.

โ€œPlease, just tell me who I am,โ€ he said, his voice barely above a whisper.

โ€œYouโ€™re Landon, Ameliaโ€™s husband,โ€ Paloma replied, her tone gentle but firm.

Landon closed his eyes, fighting to keep his emotions in check. โ€˜Itโ€™s me. It really is me,โ€™ he thought.

โ€œDo you know who I am?โ€ Paloma asked.

Landon hesitated, then shook his head. โ€œYouโ€™re the Kington Gangโ€™s princess, right? But I can see you and Amelia are good friends.โ€

โ€œItโ€™s more than that,โ€ Paloma said, shaking her head. โ€˜It kind of hurts that he remembers his wife, but not his own sister,โ€™ she thought.

โ€˜Hmph! When all this is over, Iโ€™m definitely going to rough him up a bit,โ€™ Paloma thought with a hint of mischief.

โ€œSo, who are you?โ€ Landon asked.

โ€œNever mind, Iโ€™ll tell you another time. The important thing is, Iโ€™m here to help you. And whatever we talked about todayโ€“donโ€™t let them catch wind of it,โ€ Paloma said.

โ€œI understand,โ€ Landon replied with a firm nod. He looked at her seriously. โ€œThank you, Miss Kyle.โ€

โ€œFrom now on, donโ€™t take any of the medicine she gives you. Just hide it,โ€ Paloma said, glancing around to make sure no one was watching. She pulled a strip of capsules from her bag and pressed them into Landonโ€™s hand. โ€œTake these instead. Theyโ€™ll help with the headaches.โ€

โ€œYou get headaches too?โ€ Landon asked.

โ€œYup,โ€ Kayla replied coolly.

Landon sighed, still feeling completely lost. โ€œWhy is she doing this to me?โ€

โ€œBecause she likes you,โ€ Paloma said simply.

โ€˜Seriously?โ€™ Landon was at a loss for words. โ€˜What on earth does she even like about me? Whatever it is, Iโ€™ll change it!โ€™ he grumbled to himself.

Taking a deep breath, he asked Paloma, โ€œAnd what about you?โ€

โ€œMy storyโ€™s a long one. Iโ€™ll tell you another time,โ€ Paloma said with a smile. โ€œMonica should be waking up soon. You should go take her some fruit.โ€

โ€œOkay,โ€ Landon replied.

Landon took the capsules and prepared a fruit platter for Monica, just like he always did, before heading to her room.

Paloma let out a quiet sigh of relief.

โ€˜Silly little brother, you must feel some kind of connection to me, right? Otherwise, why would you trust me this much?โ€™ she thought.

As she thought about it, Paloma lowered her gaze, hiding the sadness in her eyes. Even though Monica had no idea who she really was and let her guard down, Paloma knew she still had to be careful, just in case. As for Landon, the more time she spent with him, the more he felt like family to her. Sheโ€™d heard that heโ€™d spent years searching for her, and he still couldnโ€™t get over the fact that the kidnappers once mistook him for the one who took her.

But she didnโ€™t blame him at all. On the contrary, she was actually proud of herself for protecting her little brother at just seven years old! If it had been her brother who got taken that day, he probably wouldnโ€™t have survivedโ€ฆ
