Chapter 228
Paloma had been crashing at the Montgomerys' for four days straight, and she clearly had no intention of leaving anytime soon. She treated their place like her own personal hotelโplaying around, eating whatever she wanted, and coming back to crash whenever she felt like it. Monica couldnโt afford to offend her, so she had no choice but to tag along and keep her company. After a few days of this, Monica was completely wiped out, and her watch over Landon had loosened up a lot.
What she didnโt know was that ever since Landon met Amelia, he couldnโt get her out of his mind. โI really want to see her again,โ he thought. Whenever he closed his eyes, all he could see was her smile and hear her voice. With Amelia around, Monica just seemed even more bland. He had absolutely no interest in her anymore.
He even regretted getting engaged to her. Taking advantage of Monicaโs lowered guard, Landon finally found a chance to talk to Paloma alone. โMiss Kyle, can you tell me more about her?โ he asked.
โWho?โ Paloma asked, pretending to be clueless.
โAmelia,โ Landon replied.
โYouโre really curious, huh?โ Paloma said.
Landon nodded seriously. He wasnโt just curiousโhe missed her like crazy, his longing as deep as the sea.
โWhatโs your name?โ Paloma asked, turning the question back on him.
Landon looked lost. โI donโt remember. Monica calls me Lamo.โ
Palomaโs eye twitched. โLamo? Sounds like "love Monica." Monica is so good at fooling herself,โ she thought.
โSo, where are you from?โ Paloma pressed.
โI have no idea,โ Landon replied, shaking his head. โI asked Monica, but she just said the past doesnโt matter. She also told me Iโm an orphan, with no family at all.โ
โAnd do you actually believe her?โ Paloma asked.
Landon hesitated for a moment, searching Palomaโs eyes, then asked softly, โCan I really trust you?โ
โOf course,โ Paloma said with a smile. โWhat a silly little brother,โ she thought. He obviously already trusted herโthatโs why he came to her with his questions.
โAt first, I trusted Monica. But lately, I feel like sheโs hiding something from me,โ Landon admitted.
Palomaโs smile grew even brighter. โExactly. She really is lying to you.โ
Landonโs expression shifted, anger surging within him.
โLet me tell you about Amelia first,โ Paloma said, shifting her position to get more comfortable. โHer husbandโs name is Landon. He was injured during a mission and ended up forgetting all about her.โ
โHe lost his memory too?โ Landonโs heart skipped a beat. โWhat a coincidence. I lost my memory too,โ he thought.
โShe was devastated for a while, but then she pulled herself together and took charge of protecting her husbandโs family business, but also protected her mother-in-law. Sheโs a really strong woman,โ Paloma continued.
โShe really isโฆโ Landon murmured.
Landonโs heart throbbed with pain again. โJust how did she pull all that off by herself?โ he wondered. He just wanted to pull her into his arms and tell her everything would be okay.
This overwhelming urge made a wild idea pop into his headโwhat if he was actually her amnesiac husband? โSo thatโs why she looks at me with so much love in her eyesโฆ and why sheโs so heartbroken that I donโt remember her?โ he wondered.
The more Landon thought about it, the more real it felt. It was like an invisible hand was squeezing his heartโit hurt so much he could barely breathe. โIs it me? Am I really him?โ he thought, his mind spinning.
โLamo, are you starting to doubt your own identity?โ Paloma asked, her voice calm and unreadable.
Landon hesitated for a second, then nodded.
โMonica never lets me leave or have any contact with the outside world. Itโs hard not to start doubting everything,โ he admitted.
โYeah, thatโs true,โ Paloma agreed, nodding. She nodded with a smile. โYouโre pretty sharp. So, what are you going to do about it?โ
โGet my memories back,โ Landon said.
โAnd what if you never remember?โ Paloma pressed.
Landon was taken aback. โNo way! The doctors said most people with amnesia get their memories back eventually.โ
โBut Iโve been like this for yearsโlost my memories, and nothingโs ever come back,โ Paloma said, tapping the back of her head. โItโs been hurting for ages, and sometimes it still acts up out of nowhere.โ
Landon stared at her in shock. โWait, youโฆ you lost your memory too? And you get those headaches?โ โNo way, Iโm not the only one?โ he thought, his mind reeling.
โHereโs a secret, just between us,โ Paloma leaned in, dropping her voice to a whisper. โWeโre not really amnesiacs. Someone put a chip in our headsโit blocks out everything from our past.โ
Landonโs jaw dropped in disbelief. Almost without thinking, his hand started to reach for the back of his head.
But Paloma quickly stopped him.
โEverything here is under Monicaโs control. Watch your expression,โ she warned.
A storm brewed in Landonโs eyes. He took several deep breaths before he could calm himself.
โPlease, just tell me who I am,โ he said, his voice barely above a whisper.
โYouโre Landon, Ameliaโs husband,โ Paloma replied, her tone gentle but firm.
Landon closed his eyes, fighting to keep his emotions in check. โItโs me. It really is me,โ he thought.
โDo you know who I am?โ Paloma asked.
Landon hesitated, then shook his head. โYouโre the Kington Gangโs princess, right? But I can see you and Amelia are good friends.โ
โItโs more than that,โ Paloma said, shaking her head. โIt kind of hurts that he remembers his wife, but not his own sister,โ she thought.
โHmph! When all this is over, Iโm definitely going to rough him up a bit,โ Paloma thought with a hint of mischief.
โSo, who are you?โ Landon asked.
โNever mind, Iโll tell you another time. The important thing is, Iโm here to help you. And whatever we talked about todayโdonโt let them catch wind of it,โ Paloma said.
โI understand,โ Landon replied with a firm nod. He looked at her seriously. โThank you, Miss Kyle.โ
โFrom now on, donโt take any of the medicine she gives you. Just hide it,โ Paloma said, glancing around to make sure no one was watching. She pulled a strip of capsules from her bag and pressed them into Landonโs hand. โTake these instead. Theyโll help with the headaches.โ
โYou get headaches too?โ Landon asked.
โYup,โ Kayla replied coolly.
Landon sighed, still feeling completely lost. โWhy is she doing this to me?โ
โBecause she likes you,โ Paloma said simply.
โSeriously?โ Landon was at a loss for words. โWhat on earth does she even like about me? Whatever it is, Iโll change it!โ he grumbled to himself.
Taking a deep breath, he asked Paloma, โAnd what about you?โ
โMy storyโs a long one. Iโll tell you another time,โ Paloma said with a smile. โMonica should be waking up soon. You should go take her some fruit.โ
โOkay,โ Landon replied.
Landon took the capsules and prepared a fruit platter for Monica, just like he always did, before heading to her room.
Paloma let out a quiet sigh of relief.
โSilly little brother, you must feel some kind of connection to me, right? Otherwise, why would you trust me this much?โ she thought.
As she thought about it, Paloma lowered her gaze, hiding the sadness in her eyes. Even though Monica had no idea who she really was and let her guard down, Paloma knew she still had to be careful, just in case. As for Landon, the more time she spent with him, the more he felt like family to her. Sheโd heard that heโd spent years searching for her, and he still couldnโt get over the fact that the kidnappers once mistook him for the one who took her.
But she didnโt blame him at all. On the contrary, she was actually proud of herself for protecting her little brother at just seven years old! If it had been her brother who got taken that day, he probably wouldnโt have survivedโฆ
