Chapter 58
Upon arriving at the Bennett family home, the maids were busy. Dans was a little impatient and told Sally to dismiss them. Sally nodded and ordered the maids to leave.
Theresa looked around and asked, "What about your family? Where have they gone?"
Sally didn't know and looked up at the housekeeper. The housekeeper said, "Mr. Bennett Sr. went fishing. Mr. and Mrs. Bennett went to a party. Lauren and Jeffery don't live here anymore; as for Darren…"
The housekeeper shook his head. "I don't know where he went."
"Sally," Theresa gossiped, "Is Darren really going abroad in the second half of the year?"
Sally nodded. "It's true. He'll leave after this semester."
Theresa sighed. "I thought it was just a rumor. Didn't he say anything or object to leaving?" Although Theresa and the other girls were friendly with Sally, they were quite afraid of Darren, who seemed easily angered. They weren't sure what might upset him. Lisa was now curious about Darren.
Speaking of Darren, Sally also felt uneasy. Since he ran away that day, he hadn't returned. They were worried, but not concerned about him lacking shelter. Mrs. Bennett assumed he was in a bad mood and didn't want to come home, so she sent a maid to check on him.
Sally frowned. "It's no use; he hasn't come home."
"Probably angry," Theresa guessed.
Sally agreed silently.
They sat in the living room, chatting and eating fruit. Theresa felt tired, but Lauren hadn't returned. She turned to Lisa and asked, "What time is it?"
"Why hasn't Lauren come yet?" Theresa wondered.
Lisa checked her phone. "It's almost six o'clock."
"It's late!" Theresa's eyes widened. She rubbed her stomach. "It's almost dinner time. I'm hungry!"
The housekeeper announced, "Dinner is ready. You may go to the dining hall."
Sally stood. "Let's go to dinner." In the dining hall, Theresa asked, "Will she come back?" Sally didn't care whether Lauren returned. It was none of her business if Lauren liked Herman; after all, Sally loved Sandy. But Sally knew Dana liked Herman.
Sally looked at Dana, wondering what she was thinking.
Dana, already impatient, said angrily, "Let the housekeeper call and ask if she's coming back."
The butler, overhearing, offered, "Do you want me to call Lauren?"
Sally smiled at the housekeeper. "We saw Lauren on the way, so I assumed she'd be home tonight." The housekeeper nodded. "Should I call her?"
"I'll call her," Sally said, taking out her phone.
Lauren was curled up on the sofa, reading. She had a terrible headache and didn't want to work. She'd ignored several calls from the laboratory; she just wanted to be alone. She was reading Gone With the Wind. She'd read it often in her younger years, but had less time since college. ###novel###
