Chapter 59
Lauren picked up the phone. Listening to the voice on the other end, Sally was slightly surprised and then asked, "Will you come back today?"
"I didn't come back yesterday either," Lauren replied. This implied Lauren wanted Sally to be direct.
Sally explained, "I want to ask someone to repair your car as soon as possible."
Lauren closed her eyes, her tone careless. "Kelly already had it repaired, and she'll send the bill to you later." Sally had thought Lauren might use this opportunity to announce her relationship with Herman, but surprisingly, she didn't.
After a moment of silence, Sally said, "Your car looks good. Even if it's repaired, it may not be as good as before. If you need to assess the damage, you can tell me."
Lauren nodded. "Well, Kelly will contact you later." She hung up.
"Did she just hang up?" Theresa's eyes widened, as did the other two girls'.
Dana stared at the phone, silent for a long time.
Lisa tilted her head, then suddenly burst out laughing.
Theresa asked, "What are you laughing at?"
"I'm laughing at you," Lisa said. "You guys were so engrossed in making up a story, while Lauren didn't take it seriously at all!" Theresa's face flushed with embarrassment. She couldn't believe Lauren had been so calm. It had been such a great opportunity, but she hadn't seized it!
Sally put down her phone, looked at the housekeeper, and signaled him to dismiss the maids. Only the four of them remained in the dining hall. Sally said, "We got it wrong. Lauren has nothing to do with Herman."
"Then why was she driving Herman's car?" Theresa was puzzled.
"Could it be" Dana turned to Lisa.
"Don't look at me," Lisa said firmly. "That was Herman's car, and I'm sure of it."
"Could it be that she was waiting for Herman to make their relationship public?" Theresa suggested.
Dana held her phone, silent. Lisa remained silent as well.
Finally, Sally concluded, "She must know Herman, but they aren't close." Dana looked at Sally.
Sally explained, "The Bennett family once investigated her, and I saw her information in my mother's files."
"Go ahead," Theresa urged.
Sally paused. "Her background is very clean. She was adopted by an old doctor, Mr. Bach, and was always a top student. She was admitted to a top university with excellent grades and has been working in a laboratory ever since. If she and Herman were close, Jeffery would know. So I guess she knows Herman, but isn't very close to him."
