Alexander immediately instructed his men to execute his plan while Austin contacted his family. He omitted mention of the symbiote, the explanation being too complex and potentially panic-inducing. He simply described an unknown disease, urging them to remain home, recuperate, and avoid hospitals. He assured them Dominic was developing a cure and that Alexander's men would deliver essential supplies. Austin knew the hospitals were ill-equipped to handle the symbiotes, and risked further contagion.
By the time they had settled matters, darkness had fallen. Alexander prepared a simple meal. After feeding Galen, he held his son and gazed at the stars from the balcony. It had been a long time since he'd enjoyed such peaceful contemplation.
The suburban setting, devoid of buildings and artificial light, allowed the stars to blaze brilliantly. Their twinkling beauty seemed almost unreal.
"Daddy, are people getting sick?" Galen asked, looking up.
Alexander hesitated, then nodded. "Yes."
"Then am I getting sick too?" The boy pointed at his nose, his question innocent.
Alexander shook his head. "You won't."
Even were Galen infected, Alexander knew he would risk everything to save him. Yet, his son's innocent question, coupled with the sight of his small hands and body, stirred a deep sorrow. He reflected, Human beings spend their lives struggling to make a living, and only when they are close to death do they realize that the well-being of their loved ones is what matters most.
"Daddy, I'm not afraid of dying!" The child held his father's hand, his gaze earnest. "But I miss Mommy."
The simple statement nearly brought Alexander to tears. Galen, usually sensible and reticent about his mother, had a carefree demeanor that often masked his tender age. He was less than three, yet unusually thoughtful. Still, he was a child, yearning for his mother's comfort. Lily, however, was preoccupied and her own safety uncertain.
Alexander held his son close, resting his chin on the boy's head. "Don't worry," he said gently, "Mommy will be back soon. By then, everyone will get well, and we can be together again."
Galen blinked, not fully comprehending, but believing nonetheless.
