Chapter 144: Unconditional Support
Sean had encountered many people in the entertainment industry—some seemingly clean-cut individuals who proved wilder than wealthy heirs behind closed doors, and polite actresses who treated their assistants terribly off-camera. This was all too common.
Sean thought that if Laura could see Abigail's capabilities, her assistant, Hensey, wouldn't have spoken to Lewis so disparagingly.
Unable to reach Abigail by phone, Sean called Lewis directly. Lewis, having just finished another call, braced himself as he answered Sean's incoming call: "Mr. Graham"
Anthony and Sean were both formidable opponents.
"What's going on between Abigail and Laura? Give me the lowdown," Sean said, surprisingly amicably.
Lewis wiped his brow, his voice weak. "It's under investigation. I asked Miss Quinn, and she said Laura was dissatisfied with the costumes, but Laura denied it. They're at an impasse. Laura's assistant is unhappy and even posted on Instagram, accusing Miss Quinn of lying. It's driving me crazy."
"Why cast a young actress in a historically significant drama?" Sean questioned immediately.
"The investors wanted it. I'm caught between a rock and a hard place. Securing that investment was a miracle," Lewis said helplessly.
Historical dramas, especially those shot on location, were expensive.
"Director Lewis, just manage this situation. I'll keep Laura occupied today to give you breathing room. Find the right moment. Whether you assert yourself is up to you. Understand?" Sean concluded, ending the call.
Laura's dissatisfaction with her costume likely meant she found it unflattering.
After Abigail discussed the situation with Anthony, he suggested using another artist's scandal as a distraction to temporarily quell public opinion. Then, he'd have Lewis quickly release a statement claiming a misunderstanding. He'd also discreetly pressure Laura's company to avoid escalation. If that failed, Abigail would reveal her identity as Alana.
But Abigail felt this wasn't the right approach. It was like planting a time bomb. If Laura leaked something later, L.Moon would be irreparably damaged. Furthermore, revealing Abigail's identity as Alana now would be an act of suppression.
She declined and decided to speak to Laura herself.
Just as Abigail was about to find Laura, her phone rang. Seeing Sean's call, she thought, He's persistent.
Answering, Abigail said, "This is my problem. Stay out of it."
"If I stay out, can you handle it?" Sean asked angrily. "You've been on the phone a long time. Did you and Anthony devise some earth-shattering plan?"
"How do you know I was talking to him?" Abigail asked instinctively.
Sean scoffed. "I just know. So, did you come up with a plan?"
"No. I'm going to talk to Laura. If that doesn't work, I'll step down," Abigail replied. She didn't want to put Lewis and Anthony in a difficult position.
"You faced challenges on my show. Don't tell me you've become timid," Sean taunted.
"So what? You're my husband. Do I need to be afraid of messing things up for my own husband?"
This pleased Sean. His anger vanished instantly.
"Well, if anything happens, I've got your back. You don't have to do anything. I'm already handling it. Soon, I'll have Laura begging you to stay on set!" Sean's tone turned icy.
Abigail hesitated. "How are you handling it?"
"The industry isn't squeaky clean, and since netizens say I'm your cousin, I'll show them how your cousin deals with someone who's wronged you," Sean said resolutely.
Abigail's emotions swirled, but she said, "I can handle it myself"
"What do you mean? Focus on your job and leave this to me. Laura will be begging you to stay on set!" Sean hung up.
Cameron, having finished his investigation, returned. He didn't waste time on Abigail.
Sitting in her room, Abigail held her phone, her heart racing. Reflecting on their three years together, she often felt wronged. She wondered if she should have had a serious talk with Sean sooner. Perhaps then, he would have understood their problems sooner.
Abigail calmed down. Joan was still a factor… Sean was likely protecting his reputation. If someone related to him was mistreated, he'd naturally be upset. If he were in Abigail's shoes, he'd feel the same.
