Chapter 149: Are You Happy Now?
Maggie was taken aback. "Who?"
"Ericko," Nathael repeated, staring at her. He wanted an answer immediately.
Maggie stared blankly. Why had he mentioned Ericko out of the blue? What did he mean by "breaking up"?
"What's wrong with Ericko? What are you talking about?" Maggie asked. A ridiculous thought crossed her mind: Did he think there was something going on between me and Ericko?
Nathael pursed his lips, remaining silent. They stood before the door, exchanging no words. Then, he lowered his gaze and showed her the video Beth had sent earlier.
Maggie watched intently. It showed Ericko and her in front of the pizza place on the day of their reunion. She was slightly tipsy, the alcohol making her more outgoing. Ericko was equally happy, and they were standing close.
Suddenly, Maggie recalled the incident at the hospital, where Nathael had been oddly annoyed after seeing her with Ericko. He'd been acting strangely for a while. Did he think I was cheating on him? In a flash, many unresolved issues clicked into place. Maggie burst into laughter.
Handing the phone back to Nathael, she asked through gritted teeth, "Are you thinking something is going on between me and Ericko?"
Nathael's eyes darkened. He didn't want to dwell on the past. "I don't care what happened in the past, but you have to cut ties with him in the future." Even though he knew Maggie didn't love him, the thought of her being close to another man made him uncontrollably angry.
"Damn it, Nathael! Do you see me as a promiscuous woman?" Maggie lashed out. She felt suffocated. Despite approaching him several times in her previous life, she'd never intended to manipulate him with her body or appearance. And why would she hate him after the incident?
Nathael frowned at her reddened eyes. He took her hand. "No," he said. He had never seen her that way; he only knew she didn't love him.
Maggie pulled away, staring at him with teary eyes. "Years ago, the Adams family lost a child, and I was that child. The Adams and Camerons didn't get along, so Ronald took me in and concealed my identity."
Maggie's voice trembled. Nathael was shocked. He knew the Adams were searching for their lost child, but he never expected Maggie to be that girl.
"Ericko is my brother. Does that answer your question, Mr. Harris?" Maggie smiled through her tears, struggling to hold them back, making Nathael uneasy.
He swallowed, pausing before uttering, "I'm sorry."
Maggie avoided his gaze, saying coldly, "Please leave. Goodnight." She shut the door before he could reply. Nathael stood outside for a long time, lacking the courage to knock again.
Maggie leaned against the door and cried uncontrollably. Her emotions were a rollercoaster; happy one moment, sad the next. She knew he hadn't left, but his recent coldness upset her. Their start hadn't been good. It was understandable he didn't trust her, considering her past actions. She knew she wasn't trustworthy in his eyes. However, one wouldn't be bothered if someone they didn't care about hurt them—just like Joseph, who was a joke to Maggie, regardless of his actions. When you care about someone, everything they do affects your emotions.
Feeling upset, Maggie didn't want to think about Nathael anymore. She curled up on the sofa and spaced out. Actually, it wasn't a big deal now, but she was saddened by his distrust. She stayed there until 1:00 a.m., sighed, and got up to shower, hoping to clear her mind.
Chapter 149: Are You Happy Now?
Maggie couldn't blame Nathael; he'd misunderstood their relationship based on the video. Anyone unaware of the context would have misjudged the situation. Otherwise, Beth wouldn't have recorded and sent it to Nathael. Maggie's anger subsided once she understood. However, considering her recent suffering, she didn't want to forgive him quickly.
After showering, Maggie admired the bracelet on her wrist, feeling happy. Her emotions shifted rapidly. Once her anger dissipated, she thought of their happy times. Nathael is my boyfriend now. This made her roll around in bed excitedly, and she called Mia. Due to the time difference, it was daytime on Mia's side.
Meanwhile, Nathael returned to the hotel, feeling frustrated. After a cold shower, he stood by the window, lighting a cigarette in annoyance. He couldn't sleep. Why did I offend my girlfriend on our first day together? Thinking of punching Ericko, he felt even more exasperated—he'd offended his future brother-in-law.
After finishing his cigarette, Nathael called Jimmy.
"What's up?" Jimmy, at a club gathering, went to the balcony upon seeing Nathael's call.
Nathael remained silent, unsure how to begin. Jimmy found it strange and chuckled, "What's up? Did you get a woman pregnant?"
Nathael was speechless.
"How did you appease Joyce when you angered her?" Nathael asked directly.
Jimmy paused at the mention of Joyce. "You must be dreaming if you think I appeased her." He understood Nathael's real question.
