Chapter 89
“Lettie, did the board uncover anything?” Grace inquired cautiously. Scarlett simply shook her head.
“Grace, I’m feeling a bit overwhelmed right now. I need to take a moment to rest.”
Grace frowned. “Let me know if you need my help, Lettie.”
Scarlett nodded slightly.
That night, she returned to the villa, where Cedric had thoughtfully prepared a table full of dishes. However, as she gazed at the spread, she felt no excitement and had no appetite. Instead, she started comparing.
“Lettie, I cooked these for you since you probably didn’t eat well in the hospital,” Cedric said, smiling.
Scarlett silently observed the food and said, “Cedric, your cooking skills have improved so much since your time abroad. It really shows how new experiences can help you grow, especially since you hadn’t mastered these skills before.”
She smiled slightly, but her eyes remained indifferent.
Cedric was shocked and confused. “Lettie, conditions abroad aren’t as good as here. I made these just for you. Does the taste seem off?”
He asked hesitantly, but Scarlett just lowered her head and smiled. “It must have been tough. Thank you for your effort.”
Cedric’s anxiety grew. He didn’t know what she would ask next. He couldn’t shake his confusion when he recalled the intense gaze she had given him at the company.
He felt helpless as he took his seat beside her. “Lettie, did the board say anything to you today? You seem a bit absent-minded.”
As Cedric reached for Scarlett’s hand, she quickly pulled away.
His face reflected his disappointment. He sensed something was amiss; Scarlett clearly doubted him. Otherwise, she wouldn’t be so distant.
“Lettie, I missed you all the time while I was away. I rushed back as soon as I heard your leg was healed.” Cedric crouched beside her, his eyes showing sincerity.
Scarlett remained silent.
“You’re the only one I care about, Lettie,” Cedric said desperately.
Scarlett glanced at him. “Cedric, I’m feeling a bit tired. I’m going to head back to the hospital now. Don’t worry. The board won’t say anything.”
Scarlett left to find Victor waiting outside. “Ms. Payne, I’ve informed the hospital. We can leave now.”
Victor watched as Cedric pursued her, sadness evident in his gaze. “Lettie, I’ll visit you tomorrow.”
Scarlett nodded subtly.
After watching Scarlett leave, Cedric’s worry faded into anger. How had Scarlett lost control? Had someone influenced her actions?
He concluded Leroy was involved. Given her recent hospital stay, Cedric suspected Leroy had said something to her. Otherwise, this situation wouldn’t have unfolded this way.
Cedric instantly approached Valda for further discussion. Since Leroy showed no mercy, he had no reason to hold back.
As Scarlett made her way to the hospital, she gently closed her eyes. At that moment, Leroy consumed her thoughts.
She reflected on the kindness he had shown her over the past three years. What once felt so effortless and within reach now seemed painfully distant.
