Chapter 99
“Scarlett, I truly don’t get you. You initially turned him down, so why are you trying to win him back now?” Zoe questioned, her eyes dripping with sarcasm.
Scarlett was stunned. She said, “You’re wrong. I have no interest in these matters whatsoever. All I want is to strike when he’s at his lowest.”
Zoe found her excuse utterly absurd. She smirked and said, “Ms. Payne, it’s getting late. I should escort you back to your ward.”
Scarlett could clearly sense her mockery. She also didn’t understand why she had said those words. She figured she might have been missing something from her past.
As memories flooded back, she realized she might be yearning for the person who had cared for her for three years. Now, that was all gone.
Cedric lingered in the corridor, increasingly anxious about Scarlett’s coldness toward him. He wondered what was happening.
“Lettie, you’re finally back. What took you so long?” he asked, but fell silent when he saw Zoe.
“Nothing. I just ran into Ms. Black on my way back. Let’s return now.” With that, Scarlett turned and made her way back to the ward indifferently.
Her attitude only deepened Cedric’s unease. He couldn’t help but question why this was happening and what he might have done to provoke her indifference.
As Cedric left the hospital, the Reids discreetly approached him. Tessa beamed with excitement. “I’m sure you know about what we’ve done, Cedric. We simply followed your advice. Anyway, thank you for helping Xenia.”
Upon hearing this, Cedric glanced at her. Fearing that their discussion might be overheard, he quickly urged them to leave. “Don’t worry. I’ll take care of this. You should go now.”
The Reids nodded enthusiastically before departing happily.
Meanwhile, Zoe stood on the second floor. She was furious as she witnessed the unfolding scene. It became clear that Cedric was behind it all. Fueled by this realization, she resolved to reach out to Leroy immediately.
At the same time, Leroy sat in the café outside the hospital, witnessing everything that had happened just moments ago. He sensed something was amiss the moment the Reids arrived. However, he never anticipated that Cedric would act so rashly and resort to such extreme measures against him.
The phone rang. Leroy answered the call. Zoe’s voice was filled with anger as she spoke, wishing Leroy was there with her. “Mr. Olson, I just saw what happened. It was Cedric! He reached out to those people to deal with you.”
Leroy sat calmly, staring at the door. “What could you possibly do, even if you knew the truth?”
Zoe was stunned. The matter was resolved, and causing a scene would only damage the hospital’s reputation. Reflecting on Leroy’s words, she realized that this was the best outcome.
She grumbled, “Mr. Olson, I find this hard to accept. You’re the youngest doctor at our hospital. How could they sacrifice you?”
Leroy chuckled. “It’s not a big deal. Don’t overthink it. I’m merely taking a two-week break. I’ll be back before you know it.”
He quietly ended the call, letting out a deep sigh.
In her hospital bed, Scarlett lay still, feeling as though the throbbing pain was finally fading away. At that moment, all she wanted was to be discharged quickly to distract herself with work. Moreover, she was worried about the company’s situation and whether Grace could handle things alone.
Suddenly, there was a knock on the door, causing her to frown.
