The surgery lasted for about an hour, continuing until early morning.
When Chris came out of the operating room, his surgical gown was soaked with sweat, and he felt a bit dizzy. A nurse nearby helped support him. Two people were still standing guard at the door of the operating room. According to the nurse, they seemed to be Edward, the agent, and an assistant. These two appeared to know Chris and immediately surrounded him when he came out.
“Mr. Green, how is Joseph?”
The injured person’s name was Joseph Brown. Chris hadn’t paid much attention to the name while reviewing the information; it was Jake who found the person’s photo on his phone.
“Currently, he’s fine. We need to observe the postoperative recovery. Since the lung was injured, the recovery might take a long time. We’ll confirm the specific recovery plan after he wakes up today. There is no other immediate danger. He will be transferred to the ICU soon. You can leave one person to stay with him.”
Edward asked the assistant to handle the hospital admission. The nurse brought several forms for Chris to sign. After everyone left, Edward came to Chris and said, “Mr. Green, Ms. Wilder said that after you finish here, the driver will take you straight to them. They are still at the scene of the accident, and Miss Felton’s brother is there as well.”
Chris glanced at the time. He had rushed here since the afternoon and had been tense for over 10 hours. Now that he finished his job, he felt dizzy. He didn’t say much. He went back to the office to get changed and then went out with Edward.
“By the way, I heard this incident might be related to the Hall family. Why was the Hall family the first to be suspected?” asked Chris.
Edward was opening the door for Chris but paused at the question, seeming unsure whether to answer. Seeing this, Chris said, “Don’t worry, I know everything.”
“Because the Hall family was holding a banquet next door at a restaurant. Apparently, it was Lynsey’s birthday banquet. The proximity made Miss Felton unable not to suspect the Hall family.”
So that was why. Chris then recalled that Michael had come yesterday to deliver soup. Besides the explanation, he had mentioned Lynsey’s birthday and hoped Jessica would attend, but she said she had to work overtime and declined.
Now the Hall family’s intentions were obvious. Jessica did attend Jordan’s birthday party last time and was almost mistaken for her mother. She had been pulled by the Hall family to stand by the door, greeting guests like a member of their family. Jessica wouldn’t fall into that trap again. Michael no longer needed to use bait or show a friendly face. Being cold now might be even more effective.
After closing the car door, the driver accelerated and took Chris to the scene of the accident. The place specialized in hosting various exhibitions. Jewelry and fashion shows were often held there. It was located in the most luxurious part of the city—prime real estate that most companies wouldn’t even consider. This venue had never had any problems before, so why did such a big incident happen during the Wilder Group’s and FN’s cooperation?
Standing on the operating table and seeing Joseph’s condition, Chris immediately understood that the mastermind definitely wanted Joseph dead. The steel rod had nearly pierced the heart. It was far too dangerous to be fake.
Outside the scene of the accident, police lines had been set up. Chris approached the entrance to speak, but Roy had already opened the door and was coming out, holding his phone as if talking to someone. He strode over and lifted the police tape with one hand, signaling Chris to enter.
“I know, there will definitely be pressure from the superiors. I just want to see how much pressure he can handle—whether he can withstand Nina and Ms. Wilder. Those two have made plans to go to the headquarters for a meeting tomorrow.”
